: New truck or not to new truck
crghill 04-21-2005, 04:06 PM Hey Guys,
Got a wild hair today and am looking at trading my 04 lly for an 05. April is the month to buy cars and I can have the same truck for the same payment and go from 3.5% to 1% financing. Any of ya'll got any thoughts? Would I gain any new technology from the 05?
Thanks!
BudTX 04-21-2005, 04:13 PM You are probably going to eat a heck of a lot of depreciation by turning over that 2004 so quickly.
Changing the subject, are you by chance a sporting clays shooter? Yours is a well known name in Texas shotgunning circles.
duramaximizer 04-21-2005, 04:21 PM i don't think you are gaining anything except a modified body style. i would wait if i were you.
crghill 04-21-2005, 04:38 PM Actually, the depreciation isn't bad. I paid $34,000 for the 04. I'm buying the same color truck so I can swap my cover and then I'll swap my wheels. They are giving me $30,000 for the trade. Price on the new one is $38,213. I believe my Bully dog would still work too so I'm not out anything. I owe less than 30 so I've got some equity going into it. Any other thoughts?
crghill 04-21-2005, 04:39 PM No, not a shotgunner...fisherman, but not a catcherman!
txguppy 04-21-2005, 04:53 PM You are gaining a year model (kind of) for future trade-in value only. The 04.5 LLY and 05 LLY are the same. How many miles on it? Who are you dealing with? I wild hair bought a CC in Boerne at Ancira, last Thanksgiving, traded my '01 D/A EC. Lowered payments $50, but have more payments. I look at it as, I'm always gonna have a truck payment.
Kappa9012 04-21-2005, 05:06 PM Not gaining much, if you look at the 8,000 increase overall, you could swap to a '05 front end and save around $6,000.
Thankful 04-21-2005, 06:48 PM I traded my 2004 Crew Cab 2500 (not HD) 6.0 gas engine LT package with 14,500 miles for my 2005 Duramax LT. Both trucks were nearly identically equipped and same color. Back in February when I got my 05, GM had 0% for 60 months. This was the main force that persuaded me to trade. My old 04 gasser was financed at 6.25%. I had about $6,500. equity in my 04 but I really like the fact that every dollar of my new payment goes toward the principal.
However your truck is already an LLY. After I bought mine I heard the 2006 Allison transmission is going to be a 6 speed. It even has a special read out in the DIC display. If it were me I'd wait for the 2006. It may also be the economy will force GM to offer the 0% for 60 months again.

Thankful 04-21-2005, 07:14 PM Here's the link to a pdf file that tells about the new 2006 Allison transmission.

BH in AZ 04-22-2005, 02:41 PM Technically speaking, I don't think you will gain anything. It has been reported on this site that the 2004.5 LLY and the 2005 LLY share the same reflash. So, by getting the Sept 04 reflash on your 2004.5, you will have the 2005 performance figures. There are no reported material changes to the engine or transmission.
There is a thread on this site somewhere talking about what was changed on the 2005. Three items I remember are the front end, a change to the DIC info (no more instant fuel mileage), and the blue color change. Also, the 2005 has a sun roof option. Any differences between the two years is minor.
By going to the 2005 you will gain a year on the warranty, start over on the mileage, and have a one year newer truck upon resale. On the other hand, you will loose the cost associated with the first year of depreciation (the highest), maybe some of the cost for custom upgrades, and probably have one more year of payments.
If the truck runs good and it is a winner, I would keep it. There are several posts on this site where someone bought a new truck and had problems that were not easy to resolve. For some unknown reason, a certain percentage have low few mileage, overheating issues or low power issues that are not fixed. Buying a new vehicle can be somewhat of a crap shoot on getting a winner. Since there is nothing to be gained in the functionality of a new one, and if the old one is a good truck, I would stick with it. You do not have much to gain, but do have the potential of loosing a lot. These are heavy duty vehicles intended to have a much longer life than your average Geo Metro.
crghill 04-23-2005, 06:33 AM Still thinking, no decisions yet.
sammy 04-23-2005, 10:26 AM I am on my 4th truck since 2001 (long story) and am tired of it! I like the idea of waiting for the new 6spd allison, or even waiting a year after that to work out any "new model bugs".
SUMMITMAXLLY 04-23-2005, 06:07 PM I thought the 2006 model year update is only for the SUV: Suburban and Tahoe. Then, in the 2007 model year, the truck line will be updated. Is this still correct???
Thankful 04-23-2005, 06:12 PM I'm not sure if the next major design change is 2007 or 2008, but the Allison 6 speed debuts next year with 2006.
