: Good Cat Back Exhaust
053500cc 04-21-2005, 11:59 AM I have an 05 crew cab dually 4x4 and was thinking about getting a cat back system. Will it improve the egt? I don't want to lose the cat due to warranty issues. Also, don't want the finger stick and egr block stuff, just want a little less backpressure. Will the cat and a higher flow cat back system give me enough back pressure to keep from setting codes? Thanks
Mark_my_word 04-21-2005, 03:47 PM From what I've seen from posts, if you add a 4" cat back you will get some better EGT's but nothing like you would from removing the cat. It you don't want warranty issues then that's about all you can do.
I believe that removing the cat is really what is going to cause you to throw codes and set an ses light but I believe this depends on the emissions where you are located. I know this will happen if it is a California emissions. I think it might happen with Northeast emissions as well.
I'm not sure how much of an issue taking off the cat will be for the warranty. It just depends on the dealer.
turbo lcc 04-21-2005, 08:30 PM Take a look at the MBRP system you can slide the cat back on in about 30 minutes if you so choose. As a cat back system it set NO codes on my truck. It sounds 100% better with the cat off IMO.
JROMY 04-21-2005, 09:57 PM I'm new here - just bought my 2500HD CC last month and I live in New York and Connecticut and they both have strict emissions, but I've been asking the same question. I was all set to go with removing the cat (NYS registration) where you are exempt with commercial plates in a GVWR of more than 8500# (NYS), but found out that the laws are changing very soon where the cat might be required even in trucks like ours for emissions. I decided to order a cat back system for that reason. From what the experts tell me, there is a "seat of the pants" acceleration difference as well as sound, but for me, it wasn't worth having two systems that I had to bolt on and off yearly when I went in for inspection/warranty. I also really want to keep the sound down due to the amount of time I spend in urban areas, and it certainly sounds like keeping the cat will help along these lines. Good luck with your decision.
Mark Craig 04-26-2005, 02:49 PM 053500cc,
You will drop EGT's and get a quicker spool up on the turbo too, some folks report MPG gains as well. To date we haven't ever had anyone that kept the cat in place set any engine codes or lights with the MBRP systems we sell. Keeping the cat in place also keeps the sound volume darn near stock too, except when you have your foot in it ! Give us a call and we will be lgad to help you with any questions you might have.

Ringer68 04-26-2005, 04:06 PM I am installing a set of MBRP Cool Duals I purchased from DPPI last Thursday. UPS delivered them yesterday and I will be installing them Friday. I will post next week on how they sound etc. after I run them awhile.:grd:
053500cc 04-26-2005, 04:15 PM Cool, are you installing the whole exhaust, or just the cat-back?
My magnaflow is a great cat back system. 304 stainless w 5"tip. I love it.
Ringer68 04-26-2005, 06:14 PM Cat back....Don't want to deal with problems of deleting the CAT. Besides that, the Ozone layer is going to hell. (I'll get flamed for that comment.):D
sdjohnny 04-26-2005, 06:38 PM You're right Ringer! Dumb comment, especially when you own a diesel, probably a couple of gas powered cars, gas powered lawn mower, gas powered edger, snow blower, boat, etc....:joke:):h  :smashfrea
Ringer68 04-26-2005, 07:13 PM Other car runs off batteries, goats mow lawn, wife shovels snow and boat has oars:muahaha:
sdjohnny 04-26-2005, 08:25 PM :funnypost :beerchug: I wish I had a wife that shovels. Not that I have anything to shovel, but it sure sounds cool.
