: Dmax vs 7.3 Powerstroke
lost2a6 04-21-2005, 11:02 AM I currently have a 2000 F-250 CC 4x4 SWB Powerstroke. It has been moded some with the Diesel Innovations chip, 4" exhaust, intake, etc. For the most part I like this engine. I have had no major problems with it, seems that the 7.3 PSD has proven to be a good engine. However I don't care for the Ford truck.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/Throwup.gif <?xml:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /><v:shapetype id=_x0000_t75 stroked="f" filled="f" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" o:preferrelative="t" o:spt="75" coordsize="21600,21600"><v:stroke joinstyle="miter"></v:stroke><v:formulas><v:f eqn="if lineDrawn pixelLineWidth 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 1 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum 0 0 @1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @2 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 0 1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @6 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @8 21600 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @10 21600 0"></v:f></v:formulas><v:path o:connecttype="rect" gradientshapeok="t" o:extrusionok="f"></v:path><?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:lock aspectratio="t" v:ext="edit"></o:lock></v:shapetype><v:shape id=_x0000_i1025 style="WIDTH: 24pt; HEIGHT: 12pt" alt="" type="#_x0000_t75"><v:imagedata o:href='\\"http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/Throwup.gif\\"' src="file:///C:/DOCUME~1/Steve/LOCALS~1/Temp/msoclip1/01/clip_image001.gif"></v:imagedata></v:shape>I'm thinking about getting rid of it and getting a 01 or 02 Dmax cc 4x4. Have any of you done this and regretted doing this? I don't want to go from a pretty reliable truck to something that I will have to constantly munk with.<o:p></o:p>
Thanks, Steve
ratlover 04-21-2005, 11:09 AM Duramaxes are pretty reliable short of the injectors but thqts wqranteed out till 200k
A stock duramax will run about as strong as a chipped 7.3, also alot quiter. 7.3's are pretty good motors though.
JEBar 04-21-2005, 11:13 AM by the first of next week, we will turn over 87,000 miles on our early '02 Duramax (that means '01 injectors) .... to date, no engine issues whatsoever

J-HEFF 04-21-2005, 11:37 AM We have a 01 duramax with allison that is getting close to 160,000 miles, no injector problems or mechanical problems to speak of. The whole truck itself is holding up very well, and it's used extremely hard. My personal truck is an 02 with about 67,000 miles and I've had no problems besides clutch and flywheel, but thats a typical gm six speed for ya. The rest of the truck has been excellent, and mine has not yet experienced any injector problems. Just for the record, I have lots of friends that run 7.3's, and pretty much every one of them has had good luck with the engine. I personally think it was a great motor. Just look around for a good used duramax, I'd probably go with an 02 just because of the typical recalls and issues with first generation pickups. 2001 was the first model year for the duramax. Hope this helps, and good luck in the search!

lost2a6 04-21-2005, 04:58 PM Thanks guys, I like the 7.3, I just don't care for the Ford in general. How about the 4x4 part of the GM, how is the transfer case and front ends holding up?
st_pinetree 04-21-2005, 06:03 PM I traded my 1999 F250 a year ago. Never looked back. Course, my Furd was a total POS, so I may not be an unbiased opinion.
robertleeii 04-21-2005, 07:59 PM just got rid of my 01 psd for my 02 dmax i am a compleat ford man i mean i was the dmax changed my view on trucks
lost2a6 04-21-2005, 11:07 PM Well I guess that I'm going have to go through with this. I had I guy offer me $22,000 for my truck with a 138,000 miles. I feel that was a very reasonable offer.:ro)
harleycb 04-22-2005, 10:44 AM In addition to my '01 dmax, I also have an '03 7.3l PS. I use the dmax as my daily ride and the PS as my heavy hauler. I like them both for different reasons. Both get very similar mileage, but w/o chips or programmers, it feels like the PS can pull alittle better, and has alittle better top end. The dmax seems to be the smoother of the two. Interior comforts, GMC beats the Ford hands down. The only work I've done with the two is to improve the suspension on the Ford and to start replacing worn parts on the front end of the GMC (80,000 miles currently). Overall recommendation - personal preference.....
RedRiceEater 04-22-2005, 06:05 PM harleycb I sort of felt the other way on an unchipped truck. I feel like the dmax is a little better. If you take in to consideration different towing weights, different conditions, etc etc... its hard to compare really. The two PS trucks I've been around were a 99 (dad's old truck) and an 02 (uncle's) and the dmax's are an 02 (mine) and an 04.5 (dad's).
Just to throw my opinion in, I think the ford looks nice especially with some bigger tires. But I drive longer distances and mostly on the interstate so the interior comfort is a big thing with me. The chevy/gmc interior whips everyone in that department (my opinion of course) and ride comfort, from my experience its more smooth with a chevy/gmc.
Duramax_Farmer 04-28-2005, 07:24 PM No problems with mine other than mine threw a PO 181 code that all it needed was the ECM reflashed. That was it other than like what was said about the DMF. Love mine and I like my dads Cummins better than anything else but I was a die hard Chevy guy and now that I have Duramax I am so glad I didn't get a Dodge or Ford cause I love mine better than anything else.
packfan 04-28-2005, 08:32 PM I agree Chevy has much better interiors, but the 2005 King Ranch edition blows away Chevy interiors.
coyotekid 04-28-2005, 08:36 PM I really like the 7.3's, but they do feel like total roaches compared to stock LB7s or LLYs. Now that my D-Max is on 'roids, our Ford seems incredibly slow.
duramaximizer 04-28-2005, 10:50 PM I agree Chevy has much better interiors, but the 2005 King Ranch edition blows away Chevy interiors.
are you smoking something. i know the ford interior is bigger but I still love the GM interior design and find it much superior to any other brands interior.
packfan 04-29-2005, 12:41 PM have you sat on/felt King Ranch leather?
HoustonDMax 04-29-2005, 01:06 PM I grew up working on the King Ranch; helped get me through school!. Does sitting on it before it comes off the hoof count? JK, they are nice, though!
