I was crusing Ebay the other day and entered Glow Plug and I didn't get anything new or interesting, but down at the bottom of the page I saw a small engine shops store and I went there by chance and looky at what I found. http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/images/smilies/cool.gif http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/images/smilies/cool.gif http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/images/smilies/cool.gif

Well to make it short he had an Onan diesel engine glow coil and so I decided to get one to see if it would work in my 6.5 here are some pics and info on it.

It is a Champion CH3 Glowcoil it has the following # on it: CH3, CX2, and 12V.

Thread: M18x1.50

Voltage: 12v

Wattage: 385watts

From the seat base to the end of the glowcoil it is just over 2 1/8" (gimme a break I'm at work with nothing, but a wood ruler. http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif

If you click on Cummins, Ford, or Onan you get the price. http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/images/smilies/cool.gif http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/images/smilies/cool.gif

I called Napa and they can order them for $26.29.

This is the one that Peter used:
Volvo Construction Equipment Part #:11998965
Part is used on old Excavator EW / EC 150 C
Part is rated € 75.- overhere.
Dealer can be found at Volvo.com in the construction equipment section, there is a dealer locator.

I found the part, but its $110.16 for one I need to find a cheaper one.

The thread and hole size are:
M22 X 1.5. hole needs to be 20.5 MM

note I got the idea from Peter Bierman on thedeiselpag he has a twin turboed 6.2 in Germany the last pic is his intake.

I"m no rocket scientist so this glow coil goes in the intake and helps heat the intake air to aid in cold starts? If thats the case then you need to drill & tap the intake? Help me understand, please?

You are correct thats why I posted the thread sizes.

Peninsular had one at one time for the 6.5TD and they drilled straight down in the top hat of the 6.5TD intake horn.

Kinda like the Cummins intake heater grid.

Carey funny you mention the grid heater, Bill Heath told me that this is a project he is working on with a custom intake. Carey and how would you power the glow coil off the Glow Plug controller? If so will it hold up to the extra power?

You guys are on the right track, I used one that I bought from penninsular on my 18:1 6.5, I wired it in the same circuit as the rest of the glow plugs for better start ups in winter weather. Worked great. I ran mine down through the top bonnet.:cool2:

Some are called a "Thermostart". Fuel directed into the hot coils to start cold engines in tractors and other equipment. Can be found quite cheaper than 50 bucks. See : http://www.sphosting.com/dsl/fiatthermostart.html

Diesel Pro,

What kind of pump/regulator setup do you need to supply the fuel?

Here is another interesting idea if you don't mind green paint in your GM product. :p:

Would these heaters really work on a large diesel?I know they are common on small 1-2 cylinder diesel powered generators and small yard tractors as Kabota diesels for eg.

The first link I sent for the first one shows the Cummins used it in the V903 (IIRC the 903 part is the cubic inches) diesel engines that were used in tractor trailer trucks at one time and other applications too.
