: Under Load - leaking air noise
astralepic 04-02-2009, 09:18 PM Fellas, I recently went on a road trip pulling my camper. I notice under load it sounds like something is leaking air from the left side of the motor. I roll down the window and can't hear it over the motor/turbo, but when in the cab with the window rolled up and under load, I can hear it. Very interesting sound to say the least, but no apparent loss of power or fuel mileage. I only noticed it after having the truck serviced due to an oil leak at the turbo. Any ideas? Should I be concerned? I don't want to take her in unless I have to. No need to have someone monkeying around with it...

Have you checked around the turbo to see if anything is lose?
Whitepower350ci 04-02-2009, 10:10 PM May be just natural wind noise from the truck being on the highway. I know I always here wind noise from my antennas and the constant whine on the turbo. Have you done any recent modifications to the truck? For example I noticed a huge difference after installing my scanner antenna, but in your case it may be rain guards or a bug guard? My $0.02

GaryK 04-02-2009, 10:20 PM Left side is where the turbo hose connection is, check it
astralepic 04-03-2009, 07:48 AM Checked hose clamps and all appear to be tight. Actually might give the appearance of being overtightened. Maybe I should start there. Any suggestions of how to test for air leak? Gassers you could use a little starting fluid, but not sure about that with a diesel.
ISurvivedNMU 04-04-2009, 09:34 AM Might what you are hearing be the turbo. They do make a higher pitched whistle when making boost. I don't hear it much unloaded, but with a heavy load I can hear the whistle.
username taken 04-04-2009, 11:40 PM don't use starting fluid with a diesel!!!! big boom, very bad.

i've noticed the same noise over the last few weeks, sounds like it's coming from the left air vent as you described.it's a wierd noise like a gargaling, swooshing sound (if that makes any sense) and it dose it all the time even when not towing.i looked under the hood and can't tell where it's coming from, and no power loss here either. it didn't do it for the first 3500 miles, and now with 6000 miles it dose!
astralepic 04-24-2009, 02:25 PM Been a while since i was last here and I don't have an update. I've been through everything I can find that might help the cause. I guess it's time for a run to the dealer to see what they have to say. Going to go ahead and more over the synthethic on the power steering. About tired of hearing that little whine as well. For such an awesome truck, it's a shame it rattles so bad, has a whining power steering (yes, fluid is in check) and a phantom problem I can't see to chase down.
On a brigher note, gas mileage is starting to come in. Last tank was 19.5. Oil leak seems to have subsidded, but too early to tell... Otherwise, love the truck. More power than I could have ever imagined. Time to upgrade the stereo so I can drown out the rattles.
omarmclemore16 05-14-2009, 12:21 AM Got that same swooshing sound, but i only got it after i installed my intake
Rotorsean1 05-14-2009, 09:43 AM My truck makes the same noise, seems to be worse when the engine is cold. It has always done it since I have owned it. No loss of power and unable to determine if it is not a normal noise.
