: Allison Transmission problem
01chevyHD 03-29-2009, 04:10 PM Hi everyone,
I just joined this forum today because I have a problem I can't figure out and thought maybe someone could help. I was driving on the interstate about 65 mph today and I suddenly lost all engine power. At the same time I noticed a large cloud of bluish white smoke came through the exhaust of my truck. I got into the breakdown lane and restarted the truck, got out and checked the engine and transmission for fluid leaks and the gauges for problems, and there was nothing. Got back in and started to drive, and couldn't get out of first gear (about 15-20 mph, 2000 rpm). I drove about a quarter mile at this speed before the truck suddenly shifted and drove like normal back to highway speeds. Only evidence of it happening is a service engine soon light. When I got home, I checked the code and it said DTC not found, even though the light is still on. The truck is a 2001 2500HD Duramax with the Allison 5-sp. I have an Edge chip that was on stage 1 when this happened. I removed it when I was on the side of the road. Thanks for any help
Tanc Crusher 03-29-2009, 05:09 PM I would get the balance rate test done on the injectors. Sounds like may have stuck open. Other idea is maybe the EGR is going bad or needs cleaned. EGR was simliar for me with lose of power but not heavy smoking unless I floored and then black smoke galore. Never had the shift issue but never stopped when it happened. Just new my EGR was messing up.

Ramblinrodney 03-30-2009, 08:31 AM No EGR on 2001 Duramax
01chevyHD 03-30-2009, 11:12 AM So if there is no EGR on the truck, should I get the balance rate tested on the injectors? Where would I take it to do that? Thanks for the replies
mmangels22 03-30-2009, 01:49 PM no coolant leaking? then get the balance rates tested.
Tanc Crusher 03-30-2009, 05:51 PM I was thinking no EGR on LB7 2001. They did start adding later during the LB7 series though right?

lb7's egr only on the cali models
Diesel Tech 03-30-2009, 09:47 PM EGR was on 2002 and later only LB7's. They went to a total of 13 states with EGR. Get someone with a proper scantool to check for codes. My bet would be you have some in the transmission controler codes that you tool did not pickup. Use a Tech II or Allison scantool for the TCM.
01chevyHD 03-30-2009, 10:08 PM Today I was going to go get the code read with a better scanner but I noticed the check engine light is no longer on. Is the code still there? I just can't believe something like this could happen and then a day later the truck acts like nothing ever happened

Codes will be there. It is VERY possible to have a injector 'stick' and do as you describe. IF you've never had them replaced you probably will eventually.
You should also run a good additive with today's LOW sulfur fuel. Total Power is a choice . What EVER you use make dam sure it has no drier (alcohol) in the additive of choice. In addition when have you last serviced the fuel filter. Sounds like you are in ECM limp not TCM. You are rev limited.
Where is all the good tech info here? Gone'zo?
01chevyHD 03-31-2009, 06:59 PM I just got the codes checked at AutoZone and nothing showed up. I went ahead and bought an additive. I don't think the fuel filter has been serviced since I had a recall fulfilled a few years ago. Does this mean I need to get it changed? Thanks for all the help
disguisedss 04-01-2009, 01:01 AM a few years ago for a fuel filter??? im not sure what an 01 is but the spin on on my 06 i change every oil change. i think there is a good chance you may of had water in your fuel. By not changing the filter in that long there could of been water in the bottom of the filter that needed drained and ran through the injectors. white smoke is usually an indication of water. which now means your injectors could be hurting pretty bad. But then again they may be ok depending the circumstances

You need a REAL code reader like a Tech II or equivalent. IF the SES light illuminated there is codes. White smoke in most cases in a diesel (thick and heavy not steam like cold starts in gasoline engines) is UNBURNT fuel.
The GM service interval is 10,000 miles on the fuel filter. If I recall
You are WAY over do.
mmangels22 04-01-2009, 10:24 AM yeah fuel filter dependant on location your are in is 10-20k intervals.
01chevyHD 04-01-2009, 11:16 AM I was a little off when saying a few years since I changed the filter. I looked and its really been about 15000 miles (about a year and a half). I'm still going to get it changed asap. I'll admit AutoZone's code reader was a joke. Is the dealer going to be the only one that has a Tech II?

Unless you hook up with someone local that has one. If you feel like driving to CT I'll scan it for you, for free. :D
Change your fuel filter make sure you get the NEW finer micro design. There is still plenty of old supply out there and non informed sellers.
Diesel Tech 04-02-2009, 12:27 PM You sig say Indy so you might want to look up Tazman10 (Ric). He is in that area and has his own Tech II I believe.

Why does it matter where your location is? The ONLY difference in location would be in a cold climate winter blend fuel. WTF does that have to do with fuel quality other than with fuel economy?
The service, GM recommended, is 10k coast to coast ,North to South. IIR there was ,in the TSB, about warranty and change intervals.

Why is the attitude needed? I live in an area where snow and cold is absent so yeah climate is different:rolleyes:
01chevyHD 04-04-2009, 07:32 PM I changed the fuel filter today myself, instead of wasting 100 bucks at the dealer. The hardest part was getting the fender well back into place. Anyway thanks everyone for helping me figure this out.
mmangels22 04-04-2009, 08:40 PM Good to know you didn't waste money at the dealer :thumb:
