: So...The Volcanic Ash is Here, any Suggestions?

Yep, Mt. Redoubt erupted for the 18TH TIME SINCE SUNDAY!!! Well, the wind has kept the ash away from Anchorage until the last eruption, the ash is falling here now and this stuff is really, really abrasive. Obviously, I know not to drive in this stuff while its falling, but I'm worried about driving afterwards. I know the ash is going to get picked up from the cars driving in it and I want to be as well prepared as possible. I have the AEM Brute Force Dry-Flow intake kit and have heard the filters they use in these kits are the best filtering available and also have the most dust holding capability. I know a lot of people that are putting panty-hose on their filters, but I wonder if that is going to help? Besides the air filter, anybody know if there are any other things I should worry about?

Would think a good wax job (for the truck  ) might help...? Even the windshield too because the wipers will just help grind it in...? Be sure to keep the air on recirculate too so it doesnt get sucked into the system or cab... Sucks though cause on defrost it wont close off... :(

Saw this on another forum too.
Some of the suggestions were a second air filter. If you have a reuseable one, clean it now. Change your oil as soon as it clears up.
Waxing it woud help.
Like was already said keep it on recirculate so you don't pull ash in.
Unless you have to don't drive.
Try to stay on the roads. Kinda like staying in the tracks thru snow. Go slow too, it will help keep the ash down. Don't follow anyone close, you'll just get more from them.

Hey Joesoffroad, i was in the right place at the right time - with my camera! - and got these pics of Redoubt when it blew. These were taken from the Bridge Access Road in Kenai. This is the eruption that dumped all the ash on Anchorage.

I would put the stock box on for a while, its been kinda proven to be the best filter money can buy, at least till the volcano settles down. Best thing would be to take the wifes car and leave your truck in the garage, LMAO.

I would suggest you get the stuff for the windshield, You do not want to use your wipers as the ash will sand you windows. I agree with JD stock is best and buy two extras as they will be scarce in a big hurry. Keep your RPM low, and if you wash it you can not touch it with anything but water. this is one time when it is better to leave it dirty.

Thanks for the pics Cowboycadillac, those are awesome! As far as everyone else, thank you for your help, I have a pretty good idea of what I need to do now and for the next time the stupid thing blows. Hey Shane01638, how do you join the Alcan Club? What are the benefits?

Just scroll almost to the bottom on the diesel place forums home page, and it's listed under clubs.

I went through a similar situation when mount saint helens blew in wash state back in the 80s. I was in pullman and we had 3 inches of ash - light, like talcum powder. A few good rains and it seemed like it never happened - except it looked like an old black and white tv show in places - all grey...

I also recommend going back to the stock airbox and oem filter - it filters fine dust better than what you have on there. I would keep an eye on the filter and change it more frequently but not go overboard. Try not to follow other traffic too closely, etc. - they kick it up and your truck breathes it in. Also change your oil and filter more often - I would guess the silicon levels will be high well within the change interval.
