: Help please - truck problem (inj harness failure?)

Driving along this evening, all of a sudden lost power in a major way, got a CEL, and major knocking. Without much thinking about it, it seems like it might be the #2 and #7 injector harness failure. I need to search to try and confirm.

In the mean time I have 2 questions.

1. Twice after I let the truck sit for a few minutes, it started and ran fine for 30 sec to a minute. Could it do this if it is the injector harness?

2. Assuming I can't get it going again in the restaurant parking lot where I left it, could I hurt the truck by trying to limp it to the dealer about 2 miles away? I'd have to basically idle along, so it would take a while.

Thanks for any help. Now I got some searchin' to do. Arrgghh.

There are several problems with the injector harness-- first we are guessing, because you did not give much info-- I would not drive it if the harness is shorted.

Look at the passenger side of the alternator-- find a harness tied down with a zip tie strap. cut the strap and inspect the bottom where it contacts the FICM bracket. Repair and insulate with a piece of heater hose.

Next, you should "Ice Pick" the #2 and #7 injectoe connectors. This is done by removing the connector from the injector - place it against the valve cover press at the terminal, which will raise a small dimple inside the connector. for better contact.

These are easy mods and will last-- not like the dealer "Fix".

Sorry, I always struggle to provide the right info. The harness at the alternator bracket is taken care of with a piece of rubber hose. The #2 and #7 ice pick fix is what I hope to try if I can figure it out. I know there are lots of posts on that fix.

Thanks for the reply!

Thanks for the replies. Ice pick was the most likely thing to try, so this morning I stopped by Auto Zone and borrowed a code reader. #2 injector open, so yes! Ice pick it and be on my way.

It didn't quite work out that way, though. I was working on the connector with it laying on the engine. Bad move. Should have held it in hand. The pressure of forcing the ice pick through it busted the connector.

So I went to my dealer and found I could get the harness repair kit ($254), a new harness ($1600) or a replacement pigtail connector ($62). Guess what I did. Pigtail should be here Tuesday. I hope I have enough room to cut, splice, etc. It's pretty tight. In the mean time I plugged it back in, taped it up and the truck is running fine again.

BTW, they would not consider the harness repair kit under warranty. But I have read it doesn't last anyway, so I am hoping that I can install this new connector and secure the wires to help relieve the problem. I figure that is close to being as good a fix as the harness repair kit. Any opinions on that?
