Ok so here goes. I remember the milage that I get and noticed my fuel gauge was not working properly. The gauge on the dash I believe works it goes up and down when the key is turned. Funny part here when I shake the truck back and forth the gauge takes a second but moves as well but not a little from approx 1/2 tank to almost full tank kinda funny :o:. Is there a sensor in my truck that I can replace easily or do I need to drop my tank. If I do have to drop my tank is the sensor seporate from the pump in the tank. Also hopefully final thing. If and when I drop the tank is there anything that I should replace, if I have to drop the tank I might as well check things out replace what might be wrong. My truck is 01 with 176,000 miles on it. Anything that I should do? Thanks everyone for your advice.

My sending unit (in the tank) in my 01 went bad. Not to hard to replace.

Hey TBensor, I am suspect of my sending unit also.

I have an '01 2500HD and the gauge dropped to below empty and ofcourse the low fuel message displayed.

Did you have the same indications? How much was the new unit?

Mine would work at full, but somewhere around 3/4 it would drop to close to empty. I replaced it myself, but I do not remember how much the part was. Sorry.

Sounds like I may have a different fault.

Anyone else know what part I need to replace or inspect?

Sounds like the sending unit in the tank. I suggest you lift the bed instead of dropping the tank-- just 6 bolts and a few beers for your buddys to help lift it. Much easier and safer. :D

Thanks JC. Are you certian it could not be any other part in the system such as an inverter, converter, signal conditioner, computer, ect....
