The autopsy of my dead 6.5 continues. I got the water pump off last night and got to looking at the pump drive gears. I quickly discovered that the gear timing marks were not alinged!
Looking from the front the pump gear (top) was indexed 1 tooth to the left (towards the passenger side). If I am looking at it correctly this means the pump was retarded by a tooth.
Is this a big deal? Would the stepper in the pump compensate? Could this explain why this truck never set the world on fire for low-end torque?
I wonder if its possible to have the gear jump a tooth when I had the pump replaced in 2001 or if its been like this forever.
I should have the heads off in the next day or so. I am really curious to see what I find in there.
