: Strange discovery during teardown

The autopsy of my dead 6.5 continues. I got the water pump off last night and got to looking at the pump drive gears. I quickly discovered that the gear timing marks were not alinged!

Looking from the front the pump gear (top) was indexed 1 tooth to the left (towards the passenger side). If I am looking at it correctly this means the pump was retarded by a tooth.

Is this a big deal? Would the stepper in the pump compensate? Could this explain why this truck never set the world on fire for low-end torque?

I wonder if its possible to have the gear jump a tooth when I had the pump replaced in 2001 or if its been like this forever.

I should have the heads off in the next day or so. I am really curious to see what I find in there.

I would bet the offset was done during the IP replacement, particularly if they did it thru the oil-fill tube opening, without removing the waterpump\cover.

No way in creation could the gears 'jump' a tooth after installation - no clearance for such to happen.

Pop the pump drive gear off. Bet the keyway has come loose. Ain't enough material there to hold the gear.

i know that if you put a 6.2 mechanical pump on a 6.5 that had an electronic pump on it you have to do that the pump timing is diffrent this will allow the pump to work straight up if you dont do that it will run but the pump has to be cranked all the way to the drivers side

so is the pump gears different on the electronic pump engines vs the standard ones? Timing sets different?

there is not eough room in the cover, even with the pump out, to raise the pump gear enough to make it get a tooth off.
it has been like that since someone stuck it in there that way.

i havent checked the diffrence in gears yet but i believe that it is the drive gear that is diffrent
