You need to get a code reader and see what the code is for. Probably minor if it runs fine( glow plug, glow plug controller, ect.).

check the code, and check to see if the coolant is low, also check the transfer case to see if the famous "pump rub" has occured.

whats pump rub?

It is the pump in the transfer case that breaks and starts to rub on the case whitch wears a hole in the case. Usually happens at the top , back-half section of the T-case. The make a repair for it. I have 104,000 on mine with no pump rub issues......yet.

Definitly! If it shifts smooth your good. But I would see if you can read that code some how. Test drive it to an auto parts store. Most have code readers you can use.

Then it would be stuck in a gear and won't go over 45mph.

"Then it would be stuck in a gear and won't go over 45mph." .....yea i test drove it shifted very nicely...almost had it floored accelerating to 0-120km/h

Is this truck at a dealer? If so have them scan it to see if there are any codes. Usually the SES light will go out at 5 cycles of the ignition.

no its at a used truck dealer...and he tells me that he doesn't want to spend anymore money on it...(he got an oil change done to it because the inspection recommended it/filled the gas tank/ and got the inspection done on his cost).... the inspection papers say it also needs a serpentine belt which i can do, and tranny cooler line is leaking which i can do...but i haven't asked him to get it scanned so maybe I should call him tomorrow and ask.

As for the pump rub, Get under the truck and look for the hole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just because it shifts smoothly, does not mean anything, mine shifted smoothly without any oil in it!

You have to get under the truck and look for a hole! If it is there, Good news, it is an easy fix, and you can tell the dealer to take 1500 bucks off the tag so you can fix it, then JB Weld the hole and fill with fluid and install a good fix like M/A's later!

Worst case scenario, is you dont check the code, the trans or motor is about to let loose and you have to pay $5000+ to fix it.

Yeah man, you need to make sure. I spent a hundred to have mine checked out thoroughly by a tech. All he found was a leaky seal and the kid who I bought it from got it fixed on the spot. It's worth it.

interesting rims for an 01

llycrew05
03-29-2009, 10:50 PM
What rims did the 01's have?

howhedoesit
03-29-2009, 10:58 PM
its an 2002, and I don't think i've ever seen any other rims than those aluminum factory ones before. I thought all duramax trucks in this body style have those ones.

llycrew05
03-29-2009, 11:06 PM
Well, some have all steel wheels, and not the factory alcoa's. But i thought that an 01 would have them. Those look like the right rims on your truck. That's what all the 2500HD's have.

Look on the inside of the glove box door. If it has a g80 rear end, it will be listed there.

i want to change my fuel filter soon...have read up on the procedure on here..but can't u just remove the filter fill it with fuel and put it back on?

llycrew05
03-30-2009, 11:27 PM
Well, you need to put a new one in there. You can't just empty and put the old one in...
I hope that's not what you were asking. If it's not, then yes, I unscrew the old one, put the new gaskets in, screw in the sensor and fill with fuel, screw back in. A little priming and you're all set.

howhedoesit
03-30-2009, 11:32 PM
yea sorry should have re-read my post there...but yea thats what i mean...new filter/gaskets/screw in sensor and screw it back on...to prime it you just have to loosen that screw until fuel comes out...with the truck now running?

Brad92
03-30-2009, 11:37 PM
i have had to prime it a few times with alot of fuel coming out to get the truck to start.

Brad92
03-30-2009, 11:38 PM
might want to look at stainless steel bleeder screw

howhedoesit
03-30-2009, 11:38 PM

i have had to prime it a few times with alot of fuel coming out to get the truck to start.

My driveway has a little hill and my truck has to be facing downhill to get primed after changing the fuel filter.

oh thats interesting...my driveway has a slight slope too ..when i do my filter this weekend i'll face my truck downhill
