Getting ready to trade out of our F-250 V10. I'd like to here from those of you that drive these every day. We are comparing the 2500HD Duramax to the F-250 Superduty Powerstroke. I've heard about tranny problems on both. We have a 5th wheel and the tranny needs to be strong. What type of fuel mileage are you getting with these trucks? I don't know why I ask this question anything is betther the 10-11 mpg with or without a load.
I test drove both and purchased the DMAX. I have no doubts that the Ford is a good product and that the Mileage is close to identical--comparably equipped.
Why did I select the DMAX 2500 HD CC 4X4?
Simple--The ride (and ride height) was simply superior. That is the difference.
Cheers.

I will agree that the GM is a much smother ride. Just have a tough time since I found a sweet deal on a '04 F250. Still waiting for the full records to search through any mech probs. Otherwise the '05 duramax could very possibly be the winner.

The allison problems are with the early modles leaking fluid and the NSBU switch craping out. The switch is an easy item to replace and if switched to the updadted tan color you will be OK.
cruise over to the dieselstop.com if you havent already and see what they think of the new 6.0's I wouldnt hesitate with a old 7.3 but the new 6.0's still worry me peronaly.

If it comes down to the strongest trans it's the Allison. It's kind of a no brainer.

I have had no issues with my transmission in 39,000 miles in a year, other than it limping from -38 degree weather... didn't have a cold front, made one of a blanket and lo and behold it cooperated with me.

I was at a party last saturday ni. and there was a Ford tech. there and he just made the comment that they are still having serious problems with the Powerstroke. I asked what they were gona do, and he made some kinda comment about designing a whole different motor. Anyway, the subject got changed, and we never did get back to our conversation, so I have no details to back any of this up. So it just an observation at this time.

With all my co-workers in the past 4 years, there were 2 D-max's, 3 Dodges, and 5 Fords when we all first started with the diesels. Within 2 years, my boss sold his 6.6 Ford and bought the newer 6.0 Ford because he was tired of how loud his truck was. One co-worker that had an 02 Ford traded it in for a used 03 Dmax. Another co-worker that had an older Ford, sold it and bought a Suburban. The other 2 Ford owners are happy with what they have. One of the 2 Dodge owners sold his truck because he had several tranny problems within the first 2 years of owning it and bought a new car. The other Dodge owner spent a lot of money in his tranny for upgrades ( not because of problems, just wanted power ) and all he has done so far is twisted the input shaft. The 2 Dmax owners, including me, are still driving them with no complaints. My NSBU switch did go bad and they replaced it with the newer tan one. Other then that no problems. I enjoy the grade braking setup in the tranny on the allison and I like the external filter being very accessible. The choice of what you really want is up to you. I personally like the interior options of the GMC more then I do the chevy, but at the time I bought mine, it was the only one on the lot at the time with all the options I wanted and more. The owner of the truck was the owner of the dealership of which I bought it from. The sticker that was originally on the window for my 01 had $46K printed on it. This sticker was folded up and inside the owners manual. The truck was a year old when I bought it with 23K miles on it and I paid $31,300 for it. I feel I got a very good deal on it. Whatever truck you end up with I hope it lasts you for years to come with no problems. Good luck in your decision.

The rumor at one of the Ford forum sites is that it's going to be a 6.4L with twins.

Interesting. If that happens, what type of message is that going to send to all of the 6.0 PSD owners and prospective buyers of used 6.0 PSD's ?

I had my doubts about the Dmax when they first came out but they've proven to be a strong reliable engine. I have seen many with 200k plus I have never seen a 6.0 PSD with over 150k and not many of those. If I were to get something other than a Dodge I would no doubt by a Dmax. People talk about the rest of the truck but if the motor is not spinning you've just got a comfortable park bench. If you are really worried about the tranny while pulling get a 6 speed! Manuals are for pulling! Autos are for cars!:D

The 6.0 having issues is not surprising with Ford. Before i bought my d-max i test drove one of the first 6.0's out and the turbo vains failed to work, it lagged bad. Some solenoid issue or what not. could have got a good deal on a broken truck but went with the D-max instead. Still made out good $48,355 sticker paid $38000. Ford has always put engines and trannys out before they should. they push stuff out because they are lagging behind. the Ford triton 4.6 and 5.4 V8's had a major issue with a cold end rock knock and thousands of engines were replaced in 1997 and 1998. Remember when they tried overdrive auto's, wow that worked well. Thats why there is shop truck at work with a C6 3-speed auto in a 1995 truck. GMC lagged behing with diesels but they waited til they had the right stuff and it was pretty damn well worked out of problems. Ford would rather put something flashing out there instead of something good. Go GMC or chevy. the torqshift ford uses was built from allision specs and features
