well basically i have a LMM with a quadzilla and a DPF delete exhaust i am towing 5000 pounds 20 foot inclosed car trailer. I have the tuner on 70hp setting and i went to cali and back from vegas got about 12.5mpg but i am wondering what setting should i be towing on. I also noticed i was putting out a good amount of black smoke. Who else tows with a quad and no DPF? What should i do to make the tranny last with this setup. Anyone who doesn't know the drive from cali to vegas its 3 hills at a high grade. Is having it smoke alot bad over time?
thanks for the help

I always just tow with mine on the economy setting. Either that or the Stock NO DPF setting. No reason to crank the power up when towing. These trucks have plenty of power to get the job done from the factory. Until I unplugged my EGR I would see a decent haze of smoke almost constantly when pulling heavily up a hill or something. Unplugging the EGR reduced that quite a bit though.

. . . What should i do to make the tranny last with this setup.
Ted's right about resetting your Quad to Stock-no-DPF for towing. Otherwise you're wasting fuel and maybe hurting the Allison.
As for protecting the tranny, street driving on Quad's +70 ... without any full-power shifting ... the Allison is fine. I generally use the Tow/Haul button whenever I'm likely to do any power-shifting, since that locks the torque converter, even on the partial power-shifts, like three-quarter throttle.
But towing at that power level could be abusive on the trans. If you were using the Tow/Haul button, it's less of an issue. You need to go to the forum named Allison Aftermarket (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=58) and read the Sticky thread about TransGo Jr. I had Mike L (Inglewood Trans) add the TGJ the weekend after first connecting my Quadzilla ... can't recall, prolly around $300 with the deep pan.

I tow on 70 with a 5000 # trailer all the time. It smokes a little more but I like the extra power. If Im towing more than 5000 # I will turn the tuner down to 50. to make your tranny last you could do some simple upgrades or turn the tuner down to 50 or below.

I run mine on 50 as well. I pull a 28" enclosed snowmobile trailer, weighing around 6500lbs loaded. I leave mine on 50 all the time (towing or not) just to keep things simple. No problems so far.

Yeah, you def need to turn that quad doun to atleast 50hp while towing. Like everyone else stated your just wasting fuel and killing the alli. I always run 50hp while towing from 5-10k. You dont want those egts to high.
