For those that have removed the resonator/silencer/dampner or whatever that thing is, what did you use to seal that ~2" hole that is in the intake tube with?

Thanks!

Fernco rubber cap, found at home depot.. do a search on the forums for 'Fernco' and you'll find some part numbers.. Can't remember it off the bat, but it should be around $3-4

used a plastic plug that is used to go over pipe fittings. Go to a hyd. shop or somewhere that makes hoses.

Why would you remove the resonator? Have tried it - results were not good (only more noise).

People like myself like the turbo sound. That's why.

Having said that, straightpiping is exactly the sound I wanted anyway, and unless I was putting something else in its place I wouldn't take off the resonator.

I pulled off my cap and ducttaped the crap outa it and made a couple runs and didnt really notice any sound. Now that was stock programing and a swisscheesed box(did notice a bit there) and also stock exhaust IIRC. You might try some test runs before you go through any work.

Underhood insulation will make a difference though.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Just a guess but looks like the resonator or what ever the experts call it is there to prevent surging. Later! Frank

Not criticizing, but am curious, how would it do that? It does have space for air, but unless it becomes pressurized vaccuum, that air wont move. In other engines, the intake tube has the same kind of dead space, and if I remember correctly, it was refered to as the 'Helmholtz Resonator' and its used to deaden sound..

A helmholtz resonator, in simple terms, is an absorber tuned to do the exact opposite thing as a bell. With a bell or cymbal or drumhead or whatever, the structure resonates sympathetically and helps reinforce or amplify the sound level.

Like, if you sing in the shower, you'll notice certain notes are just deafeningly loud with very little huffing from you. That's the room resonating and reinforcing the sound pressure level.

A Helmholtz resonator does the opposite. It has a cavity tuned to a frequency where, for most intents and purposes, sound goes in, but very little comes back out....the acoustical version of a black hole.

You make the resonator a different size and shape and it'll tune out a different set of frequencies.

HH resonators are extremely useful in tuning out low frequency sound (and is sometimes about the only way to do so). Foam works great on high frequencies like turbo whistle. Add the two together in the right size and proportion, and bingo, no turbo whistle.

Interesting info! So in simple terms that there big black thingy with duramax written on it dosnt do nutt'n for the cool wistle but is there for low pitched frequency?
