: getting true diesel sound!

I know allot of you guys on here seem to like that really deep gasser sound from ur dmaxes. However, i will leave that to the gassers, if i wanted that sound i would have bought a gasser. I absolutly love the dry, raspy, pounding sound of a strait piped PSD, some people describe that as a "farting" sound. lol But I would like to have opinions on how to avoid the gasser sound on my LLY and get a more true diesel sound. I think my best bet would be strait pipe? opinions please! thanks ):h

Ya right off the turbo strait up and out the hood like a tractor with a flapper now that’s a TRUE diesel sound.:ro)

Straight piped is very nice, I like it. It's actually unobtrusive unless you hop on it. You know the engine is there.

Bigger the pipe, the less farting sound. Little downpipe is the main fart culprit. No farting with 5in coming off the exhaust housing.

Best bet with a stock turbo is a 4in from the clamp(often called 4in downpipe), down to 5in the rest of the way. Minimal fartinghttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif

Did one LLY straight pipe like that and you couldn't hear any farting over the turbo whisle.

I would say you wont get a "real diesel" sound outa a duramax. It has 2 to many cylinders for that:Get_him:

Exhaust plays some part but different engines sound different. A stock pipe with the muffler removed would probably get you closest to what you describe.

Unfortunately, you'd better get a Cummins if you want the coolest sound on the planet. There's just no way you're gonna get that "buzzin-half-dozen" sound out of a Dmax, period.

You could, however, record a friend's Cummins, loop the file, burn to a CD and play it from your stereo!

There is perhaps one thing certain in the diesel industry in my mind: Nothing, and I mean nothing, will ever match the sound and smell of a Cummins idling on a crisp winter morning.:D

It smells like unburnt fuel and sounds like a hand full of washers in a blender):h

The 4" straight pipe on my LLY sounds "odd". Kinda like a jet spooling on the tarmac.

The V-8 Firing order combined with the VVT will keep the LLY Dmax from ever sounding like a UPS truck or a gasser.

Perhaps get a powerful stereo and make a CD of UPS trucks driving around and play it?

I don't know, I always preferred the JD 4640 (straight-piped of course) on that same morning (well, maybe fall instead of winter-but you get the idea).

I agree with habanero about the DEERE:ro) .

But I will also say that the only thing good about my old '03Furd 6.0 was the Xtreme turbo whistle! It was the baddest sound I have ever heard from a diesel truck.

I think the LLY uses the same turbo as the '04 and up furd 6.0 but their not nearly as loud as the '03 6.0's. I think they added two vanes to make it quieter.

OK, OK, so the Deere's sound good as well, but I'm sticking with Cummins on this one!

Have you guys ever played the "identification game by sound" with a buddy? You have to correctly identify the engine manufacturer by sound only. Detroits are usually pretty easy to pick out, as are the Cummins and Navistar 'Strokers. Sometimes the Cats will throw me for a loop though.

thanks for the good info guys, i heard a strait piped cummins today and it sounded insane! I love how the cumminz sounds like a semi, but the rest of the truck just doesnt meet up with my taste.

My friend has a straight piped cummins 12v and in my opinion I think it sounds like garbage. Reminds me too much of a transit bus.

Well, all I know is that unlike with the Banks magnaflow muffler, I can't hear my truck coming when it's just cruising. Wife drove to pick me up today. Now, if you hammer it, it sounds very very....mean :)

More turbo, not like a semi. If you drive conservatively it's quieter than the "monster" exhaust.

I don't know about the LLY but it sounds loud on the LB7, and you can't beat the price, was $40 for the pipe and installation (weld) for me.

Yea i am considering strait pipe now, but i just have not heard a clear answer on how comfortable it is to drive at freeway speeds. Because i cant live with a loud drone on the freeway. I would like to hear what you guys think about urs. thanks for your replies

Well, my wife likes it. 65 mph it's noticeable but about the same as the banks, 70 it's louder, 75 it seems to taper off. Obviously that's porportional to the amount of effort the engine is putting out ie if you're going uphill. I'll have to make some recordings as best as possible to put up on my website.

I don't know about the 4" straight pipes, but my stock 3.5" straight pipe doesn't sound bad on the interstate. We pulled our horse trailer from OKC to Manhattan 2 weeks ago and it sounded fine. I did notice it picking up a little drone at 76 mph and up, so it actually made a good speedometer by reminding me I was going over my preferred 73-75. Wife didn't complain, either, so it couldn't have been too annoying.

while the 12 valve and 24 valve Cummins sound great straight piped the CR Cummins sounds like $hit straight piped

Much worse than any farting sound.

Its unexplanably $hity sounding. But they still straight pipe them.

Listening to one on the dyno. In the lower end of the rpms it dont sound to bad. But in the upper rpms, it sounds like an old 22R toyota with glasspacks.

You're in Menifee and I'm in Moreno Valley. Whenver you want, head up a couple of miles and we'll go for a spin. I like the sound my truck produces especially while driving through underpasses (have to watch the smoke though).):h

A lot of times we forget that we don't have a true turbo down pipe. I think our down pipe is smaller than 3" which kills us on the sound and performance. The furd has the same turbo but they have a true 4" downpipe. Just my .2 I really wish that a down pipe was make for our trucks or redirect the pipe off to the side of the motor.

I know it, I can't believe someone hasn't truly made one yet just to see about the sound or egt's.
