flanman5 04-17-2005, 08:39 PM I bought a code reader today and this is the code i got , could it be the PMD?
I have a new PDM coming to replace the old will this work or no?
Thanks

Flanman5,
P0251 is for the optical encoder.
I got this last year because I had some wire rubbed bare where the wires to the ECM go into the cab from the engine compartment they were rubbing on the AC line. Eveyone said I needed a new pump, but fixing those wires was all it took. I have more than 11K miles since then and I have 191K miles on my truck.
Check the little stuff first because if you don't no one will. If a dealer/shop sees that code they'll throw a pump at it to fix it.

flanman5 04-17-2005, 11:15 PM How do i take the glove box door off to get the the ecm?
THANKS AGAIN

Open it and then grab the top right corner and bend it to the drivers side slightly and then pull the box down. Then pull to the rear and it comes off, but there is a cord the keeps it from falling just pull it out of the dash bar.
You don't need it there to see the wires I was talking about. To see where they rubbed on my truck it was easyest to remove the radiator surge tank.

flanman5 04-18-2005, 01:15 PM OK thanks Carey, I am going to unplug and clean at connections today.
I hope this does the trick
Thanks again

I C said the blind man. :o: :D
Good idea. ;)

flanman5 04-18-2005, 06:41 PM Well i cleaned the connections to the ECM and Optic Sensor still the same.
Going to check the wires like Carey said tomorrow
Wish me luck

flanman5 04-19-2005, 02:14 PM Would this code cause it to go into LIMP MODE? P0251 Is the only code i am getting.
If there is something on the sensor itself could i run same new fuel through it and see if that will help?
what do you guys suggest?
Thanks

Mine would stumble and cough then finally the SES light would come on and then it would either die or clear up and some times it would do this three times in a trip of say 30 miles.
I had some other codes too P0236 IIRC I ended up replacing the waste-gate
solenoid and the vacumum lines, but nothing cleared the P0251 till I fixed the wires.
note I'm not say for sure the wires are your issue, but I am saying that you should check this and all other little things (all battery cables and both ends of each) before getting a new pump or FSD/PMD.

quantum mechanic 04-19-2005, 03:16 PM Flanman,
Take the lid off the IP and look at the fuel inside, if it's clear;
Look at DTC's and timing with a scan tool for a better idea of what's wrong with the IP. When the optical sensor's going out timing will be at 0.0 and CPS will count 1, 2 ,3 as you crank. The fuel pump angle will show 60-90*'s instead of the normal !~26-30*'s
flanman5 04-19-2005, 03:19 PM It will probably be PURPLE!!!!!!!!!LOL my bad
flanman5 04-19-2005, 03:26 PM On a serios note!!!!! If it is dirty how do i clean it?
THANKS QM AND CAREY
quantum mechanic 04-19-2005, 03:30 PM you can dry it up or suck it up if you have vacuum or a $1 turkey baster. There's nothing that can be done for the optical to clean it.
flanman5 04-19-2005, 03:33 PM Then just fill it up with clean fuel i guess right?
quantum mechanic 04-19-2005, 03:51 PM That and the whole fuel tank. it only takes a few minutes to pump the tank dry using the LP and the inline from the IP.
Buy a few used IP's from ebay to get a used optical.

I had the exact same problem but the four shops I visited had me replace IP twice, CPS, ECM twice, and wastegate solenoid, before I finally found the wires rubbed through in the exact same spot as you. I wish that I had you to refer to when this happened but I think it happened to me first, April 04. But mine is same I have gone over 10K miles with no further problem.
Be sure and check under the wire loom behind the cooling overflow tank where the A/C line goes. You have to check very carefully and will probably have to remove soom of the wire loom to see them all. Good luck
flanman5 04-19-2005, 07:19 PM I shall be doing that in the morning, but if i start it it does not idle but when i rev it up it idles great.
Anything to that?
Thanks
quantum mechanic 04-19-2005, 08:35 PM You could have a blockage in your fuel filter housing. Have you drained the water drain lately?
flanman5 04-19-2005, 08:40 PM Yes as a matter of fact i did it before i started all of this fixing stuff! LOL
flanman5 04-19-2005, 08:42 PM QM I did the optic bump today and in the pump the fuel was clean.
I am going to like at the steeper motor tomorrow and see what that does.

Dave,
I guess I was lucky because I found where another guy had the same issue on another board that I don't normally go to, so I checked it and thats how I found my rubbed wires it that I knew to look there. To tell the truth I may have caused the rubbing when I replace all my coolant hoses in 2002.
I do think that lots of the DS4 pump issues are wiring related and the many were replaced when if the wiring was fixed they would have continued to work. That said if I had a truck under the 120K limit and still had the oridginal pump I would to get a new one to get the latest DS4 upgrades. I got one new pump under warrenty at around 93K miles and now I have 191K miles on my truck.

flanman5 05-14-2005, 10:34 PM Will i found my problem with the P0251 code and believe it or not it was bad comtaminated fuel.
I was pissing around taking a sample the truck coughed and farted and the check engine light was gone.
Great power after that.
It only last about 30 km then the check light come on.
I run my truck right out of fuel fulled it up primed it the light was gone i thought great then 30 km pulling my trailer the light come on no power so i am forced to drop the tank and flush it.
So i hope that works , what do you guys think?

Texas Diesel Guy 05-15-2005, 11:42 AM dirty fuel will do it for several reasons, advance piston is at the bottom of the pump, so most of the sediment/particles accumulate there, if the contamination is bad enough it will interfere with the Optic sensor's operation. If there is ANY water present then there is damage done, and if the fuel was dirty enough to trip a timing code you can bet the pump is not in great shape.
flanman5 05-18-2005, 11:38 PM Well i sucked the tank dry and fulled it with fresh fuel, primed it and fired the old girl up.
The check engine light gone and i have 200 km's on her great power no light, i am so happy:) :) :) :)
And in those 200 km's $13 bucks to full it back up at .82 cents a liter so what does that work out to for fuel mileage.
It pumps black smoke unload now it is great .
I hope you are wrong TDG about damage to the pump.
Thanks for your help all you guys that gave me suggestions.

CanadianRigger 05-19-2005, 10:57 AM That can't be right cause your getting 35.6 MPG (Canadian (imperial) Gallon = 4.546 ltrs)
flanman5 05-23-2005, 10:10 PM yes that does not sound right , cause it aint right.LOL
I just got back from west of Caroline 17 km camping pulling my trailer and averaged 14 mpg with and faulty wastegate solenoid i think. Pulling at 120km/h on the 39 and 22 south of Drayton (quite hilly). i will let you know actual mpg empty.
CAUSE THAT AINT RIGHT.
