: Cummins owner buys an LBZ, new here, see what I paid

I have an 04.5 Dodge with turbo, full tranny, injectors, dmax aluminum drivline ha!, etc., etc., and I decided I needed to buy a dmax because the first diesel I drove was a triple chipped lifted pewter full everything dmax in o3, love at first sight.

I have always drooled over the Chevy's cause I like the look and sound. So, about a week ago I went out test driving with slight inclination to buy. I actually drove an 06 King Ranch 6.0 Powerjoke and liked it! Their engine sounds sweet, rides softer than my Dodge, soft leather, looks pretty cool, and it handles tight, but I had already put $200 down on the dmax I just bought.

I'm not a newbie, I have been in the diesel game since 03 with a cummins dually, then 04.5 with my shortbed, but here's what I got.

2007 Chevy LBZ LT3, white, leather etc., bose, onstar, all amenities I can see except dvd, moonroof, and homelink (if someone can explain why mine doesn't have homelink?), no lift which is good, not even leveling with the torsion bars, 5th wheel in bed installed so he did some towing but the rear diff cover is not rusted from heat/paint flaking so looks like what he towed was relatively light, 60000 miles, no intake or exhaust which is a plus, owned buy architect so doubt it was chipped, bought it for:

$28500 plus tax, title, licence from a stealership. They tried to hit me with 399 to transfer theft registrations, told them I didn't want it, 299 for dealer doc fee, told them that was a deal breaker, and then tried to sell me an extended warrenty that covers the powertrain for less than the remaining factory 100k warrenty!

I think I could have saved a little if I had waited for a vehicle with less miles, and an individual in a jam. How is the price and miles? The vehicle is in great condition, my only qualms r a few chips in the very front of the hood from freeway travel, few scratches on the top of the bed rails which doesnt matter cause I'll be putting something over that, and normal wear and tear, obviously it's not a new vehicle, but getting a 47000 list vehicle for almost 20k less a few years later seems worth it.

Any thoughts on what I got for the $? I love the truck, but now I think I appreciate my Dodge even more because I think all 3 manufactures have something to offer, I know the Dodge is actually a pretty stout machine, I have 115000 miles on mine and handles like the day I bought it cause of the simplistic solid axles, even with a lift. I also like my cummins, and the stout 48re transmission (after $6000) which lauches ya upon lockup. Not to mention the cummins which speaks 4 itself. I get compliments from alot of younger kids on the Dodge, but tonight in my stock duramax the old guy at Maverick said "that's a nice truck, that's a really nice truck!", cause obviously white blings and is the best color!

So, for a newbie, what advice. I know oil and air filtration are paramount, for all you people installing intakes on your truck your sandblasting your engine by allowing move air/sand in, google it, so I plan on putting an amsoil auxillary oil filter on, a high efficiency synthetic air filter, synthetic fluids everywhere, and plan on taking the cat off along with straight thru muffler. Anything else for a newbie? I know the fuel filter is key, so I plan using balwin low micron fuel filters, also I add a quart of 2 cycle to my cummins gas tank per fill up to raise the lubricity of the fuel, what do I need to know about this ultra low sulfer setup? Also, can I run the CI-4 older heavy duty engine oil, or do I have to go with specific?

Price sounds about right for a stealership. I have the same truck in black and bought it used in November from private seller with 16,500 miles for 30K.

Great find on an awesome truck!!! If it's an LBZ you don't need to run ULSD, it is good on regular No. 2 diesel and yes you can run the older CI-4 oils as they are recommended. The LMM motor has the DPF, must use ULSD and run CJ-4 motor oils.

You already have a high efficience synthetic stock air filter on it. Keep the stock air filter on . It is very, very good and not cheap either. I actually question where you could find a better one that isn't just more aftermarket snake oil!

Buying a stocker is always a good deal!

All #2 in the US is ULSD.

Great find on a great truck, wish I had the money but I am in the process of buying yet another house. Also, if you decide to go with a dual remote bypass oil filter system you might as well drop in Amsoil 5-30 and the Amsoil/Injen intake for the truck. They are all costly but well worth it in my book. I run everything Amsoil, even the filter at the end of my AFE stage II is a Amsoil. I run 5-30 in my truck and will for the rest of its life.

Good luck with the new truck.

Welcome to the LBZ club. Nothing like white when its sparkling clean, too! Obviously I am biased to what I have, but IMHO, these are the last of the unbastardized diesels. I would recommend the PCV reroute for sure. After seeing how much oil was in the stock pcv tubes, you definitely do not want that crap going through your intercooler and turbo over the life of the vehicle. EGR blocking has valid arguaments from both sides of the line. Do a search on both topics and decide for yourself. I felt that blocking was advantagous to reduced maintenance in the long run.

Not true... Many of the gas stations in the Mid Atlantic still carry LSD. All of the pumps around here are marked whether they are <500 or <15ppm.

I bought mine just before Christmas,
2007 CC/SB LBZ, 22000 miles, bone stock, Leather, Bose, Onstar, etc... Paid 25900. But I also bought the wife a new ride at the same time..

Congrats on the new truck. I sure do love mine!!

Not a bad deal. The prices are going up, about a $4k swing on KBB for your rig (similar setup) since December for Retail value.
I paid $27,250 with 46K miles on it, CC, 4x4, leather (no bose or onstar) back in December.

BTW, the way I understand the ULSD is #2, the LSD is #1, I've seen #1 in Arizona...

Same truck for 27,500 in July of last year :D

With 24k miles. Maybe I need to sell mine, hehe.

Def do the EGR blocker and the PCV reroute. I found tons of oil in my completely stock trucks intake.

actually i believe you can still get just 500ppm LSD at truck stops only the 2-3 closest fuel island to the building are usually ULSD.

X2 on keeping the stock filter. Just cut out the airbox in the front to let more air move through it. The stock filter is huge and more than capable of moving alot of air. The second LBZ i just bought has a junk K/N filter on it and i am tossing it. I am putting a stock filter back on and i will be cutting out the airbox the same as i did on the other truck. Both of my LBZ's are in stock tune right now and the ECSB with 75k miles has alot more nut than the RCLB with 37k miles. The only real difference between the two besides weight is the ECSB has the air intake box modified and a cat-back exhaust.

So what about fuel additives? Is it safe to run 2stroke for lubricity? I read a lab test on all the major brands and the only ones that increased lubricity were biodiesel, optilube, fppf, wal mart 2 cycle, amsoil and 4 others. I run walmart 2stroke in the cummins cause its one of the cheapest options at a $1 a tank. Click here to read the study.

I just a bought a 06 crew cab 4x4 short bed with a really nice cap and side steps. it has heated leather and all the options like bose and stuff like that. 19,100 miles and owned buy a couple in there mid 60's that really babied it. smells like new inside and it even has 285 inch tires on it. I paid $27,900. it's a Duramax also. I was really happy with the price.
