I have read on this site and TDR about people putting different things in their fuel tank for different reasons. Trannyoil, 2-stroke oil, FPPF, used motor oil, hydraulic oil, yellow grease, Howes..... what do you put in and more important why?

I've been using Howes on the 00, haven't noticed any difference from when i didn't use anything in the 95.
While at DSG i picked up some deisel treatment that they make themselves, they swear by it so i figured i'd give it a try when i get the 00 back together.

Congress\EPA mandated clean-burn Diesel fuel in the '90s, resulting in removal of sulphur, amongst other things.

All things which contribute to 'lubricity', necessary for anti-friction in hi-pressure Injecion Pumps - of which, you have one on your truck.

No lubricity = early wear and galling of internal parts.

Stanadyne and other manufacturers suggest adding a lubricity formula to each tank of fuel, which formula may include cetane-improver, bacteriacide, water disperser, etc.

Some add old motor oil, which is full of many abrasive things, including soot.

Some add auto trans fluid, hydraulic fuid, gear lube, etc - not even good for the pump.

Others add 2-cycle motor oil, which is intended for combustion, and does provide lubricity, but does not contain the other Diesel fuel requirements.

So - 8oz of lubricity\cetane improver, and 2oz 2-cycle motor oil does it for me.

Particularly, now, when ALL of the required components are being removed from Diesel fuel, for the 2006 EPA Emissions Mandate, which does include all Diesel fuel for all Diesel engines - pickups to 18-wheelers, to tow-motors, stationary, ships, and etc.

I've discovered that the 6.5L will easily burn fuel that is has the opacity of iced tea but the optical will lose count with fuel the opacity of coffee. LOL!
http://dieselplace.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=3663
tea on left and coffe on right! These are fuel mixes between diesel and yellow grease, that was dark brown in color, and liquid at ~90*f, and mixed in the tank and recovered from the water drain on my filter bowl.

Now, as to the why of it.
I find that adding grease is adding POWER!! Throttle response is noticably crisper, and WOT doesn't drop the needle as fast. Each tank you add to will go further. It's my fuel extender. When I catch my ehaust smell it smells great! like lunch is cooking.
It makes the entire tank greasy and lubrication is important to these pumps.
I also get better milage the more I keep in the tank.

The down side is the fuel filter will clog faster than normal and glycerine will collect in the water seperator, clogging the fuel flow, and necessating a compressed air backflush of the fuel bowl.

I've done it twice and changed my filter once in the last 2000 miles I've been burning this stuff. When I had the fuel too dark, I added $10 of diesel and all problems ceased.

Stanadyne Jr. fuel additive.

Don't use it to often, because fuel injection shops need the work.

biodiesel or schaeffers soyshield. supporting farmers while you benefit your fuel system.

I add biodiesel for its increased lubercity qualities.

What about ACETONE.. I have read in several places on the net that it can increase mileage and power, apparently it works for diesel and gas...snake oil?? or fact ? 2-3 ozs per 10 gallons of fuel. I have yet to try it.

I think ACETONE would be a big no no, since it is a high power solvent. I would think if you use it you can kiss your IP bye bye.

Acetone read on... Here is the link

I read the info on the link and I don't think alcohol has ruined any engine, first off. It kinda seems like this guys wacky or something. Not that acetone couldn't help, as he suggests, to vaporize (atomize) my fuel, just something in his thinking.

hey steelyd- I'll do it if you do it.....;)

go ahead and run alcohol through your pump and see what happens. it has the same lubricating abilities of gasoline. and you know what happens when you run gas through a diesel pump.

joispoi... steiner43511.....No I have no intention of being the Guinea Pig.... Just read about it on a couple of sites.
I use Howes and 3 oz of TCW-II outboard oil that I can't use in my boat...I really can feel the power difference when i use additives.

Alchohol (EtOh, MeOh, ect) doesn't mix well with diesel on it's own but mixed in the ratio of 7.7% EtOh, 1.1% THF to the rest diesel or a mix of oils it forms a colloidial solution that is sold commericially as oxydiesel.

It does add power to the burn but The oils are where your lubricting properties come from.

If you guys hadn't noticed diesel smells more like gasoline than ever.

Diesel here smells sweet and not like it ever has before, but not like gasoline. I assume that being so close to the PRK (People's Republik of Kalifornia) that we are now on the ultra low sulphur diesel.

An odd and plesantly surprising development today... Diesel is now CHEAPER than regular unleaded for the first time in a couple years here! $2.47/gal.

Our ONLY fuel distributor here is supposed to be offering B20 biodiesel in the next few weeks.

Also, to stay on thread, I use half Powerservice white and half silver.

That's really interesting. I've heard old diesel mechanics have been doing this for a long time. Mechanical pumps can run fuel black as soot.

I'd like to know what kind of filters that they ran the oil through.

I'd kind like to try it with my diesel IHC Scout. I was thinking of adding one gallon of use oil to the tank to try it (that wouild be a 19 to one ratio).

ditto, I've been thinking about filtering used motor oil and running it as a blend. I'm hesitant to run anything abrasive through the fuel system.
A friend of mine has a waste oil burner to heat his garage. He said that the blacker and sootier the better (more hydrocarbons, more energy). If you can remove the grit, you've got a good fuel additive.

The Acetone topic is interesting.I spent 3 hours last nite reading post after post.On the Ford explore site some guy's say they tried it and saw an improvement in fuel milage of 3-5mpg!!That was at 2oz/10gal.I haven't found to many stories about it's use in diesel engines though.

Marvel Mystery Oil for me too. Definitely smoother running.

I usually run Howles diesel treatment through mine, and I can tell a difference like the marvel mystery oil. I usually get the Howles at the local truck stop. But there are alot of treatments out there, and I like what I have learned on this thread, cause the stuff you guys mention is alot cheaper than Howles.
