: Glycerine in the bottom of the drum

I ran through a 55g drum of the B100 in about 3 months. Drum was stored outside, on its side.

I am pretty sure that the only moisture that could have gotten in was from me when I took BD out. (air in through the vent)

Anyway, I got to the end of it, and took out everything but the last .5g, and I found some stuff that looks just like glycerine in the bottom. It settles out overnight, and seems to have hardened on the bottom.

Should I be concerned? If it settles out, that would mean that it dosent go in the engine, right?

It looks just like the glycerine from my homemade jobs.

Manny,

You should be OK because the glycerine settles out and you didn't use the last drop out of the drum.

Interesting you got a small amount of glycerine with "washed" ASTM spec fuel. Sounds like there was still a trace amount of catalyst left in your fuel, continuing the reaction at a reduced level and forming a bit more glycerine. With "unwashed" BD more catalyst is left in, and glycerine continues to slowly precipitate. It has to be watched out for. I never use the last bit out of the bottom of a drum or 5 gal. blitz can.

Maybe let your supplier know how much glycerine you found, and see what he says. What I don't know is if the washing process, however complete, still leaves trace catalyst allowing some glycerine to still form. - It could also be that your BD wasn't washed completely.

It'd be interesting to see if others have found trace glycerine in commerical fuel.

I've been burning the glycerine with the oil with much sucess although it does build up in the water drain of the fuel filter, most of it burns in the engine with an increase in power IMO.

Thanks for the imput......I am unsure if I want to buy more of this fuel now........i was planning on getting a few drums this week.

I posted this same quesiton in another BD forum, and here are the answers I got.......

RonJT, read this for sure.....

Interesting...they are saying that the fuel is not being washed??

I am going through the fuel too fast to have it settle out for me.

I have checked the bottom of the Blitz containers as I approach the bottom and nothing...clear. Now it sounds like if left in the tank long enough it will settle out and clog the filter(s).

I am on my last tank of what is about a B80 blend.

Are we sure they are producing off spec fuel...well...I haven't sent out the sample...I have a small amount left in one of the containers...I will try sending that out and see what they say.

Next drum will be virgin based........supposed to be cheaper.

The plot thickens.

Good idea...I need more so I will buy the two Drums of the Virgin stuff.

Btw: My last Bio in the 6 gallon container had floating small brown crud...probably no more than what would be at the bottom of a glass. I think this is what you are talking about. My multiple filter(s) should easily take care of it....and my fuel pressure at the test port is unchanged since using it.

Something to do when you get the new Bio-D, is to take a small sample and run a PH test on it. If they did not neutralize the fuel, there could still be some NaOH in the mix. Over time this might cause a little glycerin to form.

Ya, I got quite a few more replies on that site...........

When I get the new drums, I may bite the bullet and send some out for testing. At least that way I would feel better about running a better BD blend.......
