Can you test the glow plugs with a multi meter while they are still in the engine?

Yes you can, it is just like a test light. You only need to prove there is continuity. Are you familiar with the DVOM? there is probably a setting that will beep if there is continuity.

If not take one of the higher settings that use ~ sign around it somewhere. If there is continutiy, or if the reading show anything but overload, or open the plug is good.

Unplug the wire before you test it, other wise they all will test good if only one is good.

1 bad plug makes them start hard, 2 bad plugs they usually won't start. In colder weather.

Thanks Traveler. I thought you had to have a certain resistance of some sort to seperate the good from the bad.

Motor misses and smokes<font color="blue"> when cold. All on right side.

Dont seem to have the hot start problem anymore. Good thing too, the coolin water i carry in the cab is froze!

New pump goes on this week, but i am afraid it wont fix the smoke prob.

I am not sure what the target resistance is. I never felt it was important, Some many factors affect resistance how can you say "this" is the target value, If the current flows it will get hot.

I don't rememeber you have a turbo? They seem to eat plugs in the turbo area.
