: Is it just me? Towing mirror observation
thohawk 03-14-2009, 01:18 AM My 2007 came with the big towing mirrors. Anyway about once every six months I catch a reflection of a car crossing the road behind me and I nearly shat myself. I think I am getting broadsided. The mirrors are so damn big compared to what I am used to. Seems like the entire passenger side window is filled with an image of a vehicle coming right for me.
On a side note, I was leaving a car wash last summer (mirrors folded in) and I saw some dudes big belly in my passenger window. Turns out it was mine. I'm holding on to the fact that objects in the mirror may appear larger. Regardless, I'm getting rid of these damn mirrors and getting the small ones.
BombDocDiesel 03-14-2009, 01:24 AM I'm trying to find a way to make the mirrors that were on my 2005 fit my 2008. The bases are different and I will have to add another switch to use the electric extend feature but I will make it work.

You can put them up for sale or trade on here for the smaller ones and someone will trade or buy in a heartbeat. I don't have any problems with mine and actually like them over the smaller ones. You are talking about the tow mirrors with the smaller bottom mirror and not the power extend ones?
OldSoldier 03-14-2009, 03:12 PM I love my big mirrors...but it does take a while to get used to them.
My bowtie 03-14-2009, 04:12 PM I almost pulled out in front of cars when making a left turns at stop signs.
Damm things are so big they obstruct the view compaired to my smaller ones...I still have the smaller ones, so I'm thinking of switching them back..

will the '07 fit the '05 truck, if so, i'd be interested in buying them if you want to sell. just let me know
thohawk 03-14-2009, 10:20 PM They are the 2 mirror version. They extend, but manually. Turn signal and heat built in. I think I will keep them for a while as I may get a camper, but I am getting smaller ones in the interim.
DuneMe 03-15-2009, 05:45 PM I have the power extending ones on my 2005.
If anyone wants to trade for the larger current mirror design. Let me know. I only tow so, I want the larger mirrors for that.

Has anyone else looked into the bases and connectors? I don't know anyone else in my area that has the 2004.5-2006 mirrors.
I'm still researching the connectors. I would trade, no problem. It looks like the best way to swap is to find a junk set and pull the plugs first. I believe the 2007.5 + use one less wire and use different plugs.
I tow a 14' Haulmark and don't really need the current model mirrors.
05llymax 03-15-2009, 08:06 PM I'll trade you the 2005 towing mirrors in perfect shape straight up if yours are in perfect shape. The 05 mirrors sell for around 350 a piece and yours are about 150.

I'm still researching to ensure they will fit on my 2008. It looks like they may have changed the bases also. Mine are basically brand new. The truck is four months old.
05llymax 03-15-2009, 08:46 PM I think they will but I'm not sure.
BombDocDiesel 03-16-2009, 09:34 PM Does anyone have a line on the regular power mirrors for a 2008?
JC1843 03-16-2009, 09:48 PM The 06-07 tow mirrors are "Plug and Play" for 04 and 05 trucks.
The 07.5 and newer will not fit the 04-05 trucks.
BombDocDiesel 03-16-2009, 10:03 PM Thanks JC.
LMMKnight 03-17-2009, 12:10 AM I'll trade you mine :)

I have a NBS '08 GMC with the "regular" mirrors. They are power fold, power adjust, heated and have the signals built into them. They are white/black, to match my truck. I would happily trade if yours are a '07.5 NBS.
JIMMMY 03-20-2009, 03:59 PM You have to be kidding - Those are the best mirrors I have ever had. Adjusted properly there is absolutely no blind spot between coverage of the main mirror and the spotter. Even the wife loves them when she's driving and says they should be on all vehicles.
;)
BombDocDiesel 03-21-2009, 10:21 PM Nope. Not kidding. I just don't like them. Driving around town they create huge blind spots. Kind of hard not to create blind spots when you have 60+ square inches of mirror plus arms sticking off each door. I'm still trying to figure out why the power extending mirrors, which were much better IMO, are no longer offered.

I think they had troubles with them and just scrapped them, not too sure on that though. My dad had an 05 with the power extending ones and they only worked when they wanted to.
JIMMMY 03-22-2009, 01:23 AM Try adjusting the spotter (up and down wise) so you barely see just the top of the bed -and (side ways wise) so you just barely see the side of the box.
I am telling ya dudes - I can watch a car passing me go from the main mirror to the spotter to beside me in the window - NO BLIND AREAS. It's all in the adjusting. Had a canopy for awhile - maybe that's when I perfected the adjustment - now have a hard tonneau.
;)
DuneMe 06-16-2009, 11:49 PM Anyone have a recommendation on where to purchase the 2006 mirrors for my 2005 truck?
I have the power extending ones but, I like the newer style split mirror design. Had them on my Excursion and liked them better than the Power Extending ones I have now.
I know there are a few that have bought them and got good pricing.
wreedLBZ 06-17-2009, 12:29 AM www.partszoneonline.com geniune gm mirros
BigMoose153 06-17-2009, 09:50 AM I got mine off of ebay at a really good price. Just be sure you read the fine print and make sure they are GM....
DuneMe 06-17-2009, 03:29 PM I thought the prices on these were about $180 each (left and right). They seem to be about $270 each now???

whitetrash21 06-17-2009, 08:50 PM For anyone interested, I'm trying to trade my 05 power extend mirrors for some 06+ style towing mirrors. Mine also have the turn signal in, trying to find some 06+ mirrors that also have the turn signal. Heat is no big deal, this is vegas and I dont have much problem with iced mirrors.
DuneMe 06-17-2009, 09:35 PM I hear that.
I do want the heated ones but, would be willing to trade my power extending, heated with turn signal 2005 mirrors for the 2006 tow mirrors with heat and turn signal.
WhitetailAddict 06-17-2009, 09:38 PM I'm also looking to trade mirrors...I have the smaller (03-07) power fold mirrors w/turn signal, heat, and puddle lights. I'm looking for the 06 vertical tow mirrors w/signal and heat.
If anyone is interested send me a pm.
zach45 06-18-2009, 09:25 AM i drive an ice cream truck here in nyc and it happens to me at lease once a week...

Redsb3 06-22-2009, 09:07 PM They're cheaper at GMpartsdirect.com., not much but a little.
krcflyer 06-29-2009, 01:32 AM Has anyone done the mirror replacement from the small mirrors to the big ones? Do we lose any functionality of power, heat, signal, etc? Is there a way to get the power extend function? I'd like to swap, but from what I've read it's quite pricey.
JC1843 06-29-2009, 09:11 AM Many have done the swap to the large tow mirrors -- and it is just "Plug n Play". Everything works as before- heat- turn signals- heat. The upper mirror is power adjustable and the lower wide angle mirror is manual. The power extend feature is lost, because the tow mirrors do not have extend motors, so they are manual extend and manual fold. :D
DuneMe 06-30-2009, 01:45 AM I want the mirrors but, don't want to pay as much as they are charging now. No reason the price should have gone up by that much.
Anyone looking to trade for the Power Extending ones?

You might really want to check your adjustment. I used to have that issue until I got them figured out. Set your regular left/right mirrors so that you have to lean to the left in the truck to see the side of your truck. Opposite for the right side. (Lean to right to see the right side of the truck). That's the correct way for any vehicle to avoid blind spots anyhow.
Set the bottom mirrors, so that you can just barely see your rear wheels.
Since getting that all properly set, I really have not had the issue you described. Allows me to not lose cars or have cars throw me when they change lanes, and allows me to see the front of the vehicle my 5er is taking out when I make a left turn too tight...
Lazydog 07-01-2009, 12:13 PM I would agree with this post as that is how I setup all my mirrors on my vehicles, car/truck/bike. I would add also, if you have the real estate on the mirrors, that you invest in some small blind spot mirrors also.

I agree with this and have the same setup.
