first of all... thanks everyone for all your help on everything... i can hardly believe how much information is at my fingertips with this forum. i try to offer help when i can, but i think i'm getting the better deal.

the question i have is regarding tires.

my '02 came with 90k miles and newish tires. they are 265/75/16. they say 'CYCLONE RADIAL SUV'. the max tire pressure is 44 psi with 2756 lbs of weight.

but... the door jamb says to put 55 lbs and 80 lbs in the front and rear.

should i go by what the tire says? 44 psi seems pretty low, particularly if i get some weight on the axles. the max weight on my rear axle is 6084 which is not much more than 2 of these tires are rated (5512). but at 44 psi, won't they be smashed pretty low?

if these tires are junk, please let me know. who the heck makes cyclones???

thanks.

Our trucks use E-rated tires, Monkey, for heavy loading. If they are the proper tires for the truck, your tires should read something like LT265/75R16E or LT265/75R16 123/120Q

They probably put lighter duty tires on (like for a 1/2 ton truck) before they sold it, or the previous owner just didn't know any better when he replaced his old ones.

um... it's blank after the 265/75R16

these belong on a mini-van?

Tahoe, Yukon, 1/2 ton Suburban, 1/2 ton Silverado, etc....

that would be one heck of a mini-van with 265's on it

Don't put any more air in that what it says on the side of the tire. The rating on the door is for original tires, 245 75R16 load range E. If you want to carry more weihgt go with 245 75R16 Load range E or 265 75R16 Load range D or E. If you have the original wheels they will handle these sizie tires and rated weight. If you don't have the original wheels you need to find out what they are rated for. Also check your speedometer, it may still be calibrated for 245's.

i have the oem chrome steel wheels.

i already posted a question about calibrations for the speedo. remarkably, my speedo is within about 1%. others also posted that their truck became more accurate with 265's.

BAC- i decided today that i'm going to stick with this truck. i test drove a new one today, and it sure didn't feel like $13k more truck than what i have. besides... i think the '02 nailed it on styling. but with this new tire scandal emerging, i may have to go your route and get the H2 setups. that should probably quench my thirst for awhile. or does that not happen with these trucks?

can the 315 bfg's handle a load? they are E rated?

seems that the 315 bfg's are load range D. but i think i read somewhere that with bigger tires, the same load range will increase max weight? meaning that D rated 315's can handle more weight than D rated 245's?

Max load for the stocker 245's was 3042 lbs. The BFG 315's (H2's) are rated for 3195 lbs.

BTW, see the "ForSale" area. My truck is up for sale...and its back to stock, too.

Check to see if they are a P rated tire. I almost bought a set of 265s that were P rated a few years ago. Better ride for the SUVs I guess.

yip. sure seems like it. if i knew then what i know now, i would have snapped it up. one thing i have learned after buying a used truck.... is you *cannot* put enough value into a caring previous owner. i *wish* i felt good about my previous owner, and that is why i was flirting with the dealer today.

I just happened to glance back at this thread. You guys say the nicest things.

Hey, look at it this way......

I may be losing my truck, but someone out there will be GETTING it...thats the important thing. Its not the end of the world.

To answer your question on what I'll be driving, I found a 1998 GMC Jimmy for cheap thats in exceptional condition. A Dodge minivan...... . If I had found a really nice Olds Silhouette I may have gone that route.
