Not an absolute but is a good idea even if you run stock and tow a heavy trailer with long hills or grades... Best upgrade is a good exhaust which lowers the EGT`s to start with then add tuners cause if you do then you will become an addict... Even your walking pattern will change (right foot will pat the ground loud and all nervous)... :D

naaaaaahhhhh...you'll be fine. go ahead and turn the tuner up full speed too. These engines are tough.

Considering the LLY is a known overheater, with or without a tune, why would you not install a gage???

stock there's no need, the truck will back down itself if it gets too hot.

adding any performance product I suggest getting an EGT gauge so you know what's going on. Some tuners increase it while others don't..it's best to know what your truck does. cheap insurance

I always suggest adding gauges with a tuner. If you are not towing, you can usually get away w/o running them. If you tow at all with a tuner, you should absolutely add them, no questions asked.

This is a time bomb, IMO......how do you know if there are no problems or what possible damage (piston pitting, etc.....) you might doing for the future. I guess it depends on how heavy your foot may be.:D

It is my understanding that the truck will back down if COOLANT temp gets too hot, not the exhaust temps. They have nothing to do with each other.

This is some wise advice....heed it if you like your truck.

The cost and ease of install make this a no brainer, I would do it no matter what your running tuned or stock. Have you ever pulled in the mountains and had an issue? Trust me strongly consider the mod. As Byron mentioned the truck backs down on High coolant temp, but your EGT's will climb faster than your coolant and the engine doesn't measure these. Your money you decide;)

With my 05 LLY I have found that if I keep my EGT below 1300 the cooling fan rarely comes on. As others have indicated the coolant temperature lags way behind the EGT. By the time the cooling fan comes on and the system backs down due to coolant temperature you probably have had very high EGT's for a significant amount of time and possibly piston damage.

Again it is your truck and money. An EGT gauge is cheap insurance.

that was the first thing i bought was the gauges and im stock except exhaust. its just one of those things i think the factory should have added so why not.
