hey guys and gals, i have a '84 M1009 so im not totaly new to 6.2's however i am looking at expanding my harem. in addition to the M1009, i have a '74 m35a2, a '07.5 GMC duramax, and a '02TDI new beetle. what im looking at now is a '85 GMC sierra k20 , 6.2, with A/C, etc.. runs good, new tires, batteries, muffs, seat, dash pad, etc... pretty nice ride as far as i can tell. some bumps and scratches, but nothing to worry about. now for the trans question. it has a 3 speed stick. ive seen mention of 4 speeds then but i dont recall if the 3 was an option or not. anybody know? the asking price is 3k. it has 133k on the odo. everything seems to be tight, oh and one thing that is wrong is the water in fuel light is on. the seller claims it has been on for over a year after he got some fuel in oklahoma. had all the filters changed etc.. but light wont go out. is there a reset procedure for this light, or do ya think theres still some moisture in the system somewhere? thanks for any advice.

could be a bad sensor or wire.....some years had the WIF sensor in the fuel tank, so if he didnt drain the whole fuel tank it might be triggering the WIF light. I kinda doubt it for a whole year though

does the ac work? $3k is pretty high for these trucks....any rust? Might be worth it if its pretty solid and doesnt need a new ip (milage suggests a new one and injectors) and if it hasnt had a new one factor about $1000 for the ip and injectors

Is this a 3 speed with overdrive?

If it is, that is what my 85 had. We went through 3 of them before I replaced it with a NVG4500.

why did you have to change these transmissions? i have one in my 85' 6.2L diesel 1500 i had just changed the cover gasket and what a bitch to change i had to drill a hole in the cover to put a nail in so it held the 1st and 2nd gear detent up while i pushed the cover on and i had to hit the pin that held the reverse lock arm that locked the 1st and 2ndd ford from moving and turns on the back up lights we put a new clutch in it maybe 50km ago and it works fine id like to know what happened with your 3

I forget exactly what trans it was, but it was also common in some of the Dodge products (I was told it was bought from Dodge), anyway, the failure was it would start to pop out of overdrive, and then it would have difficuitly going into any of the gears.

I forget now what eactly was going wrong with mine. I was told but that was 20 years ago.

We had it rebuilt once and then that one failed. New one lasted 50K, the rebuild lasted 40K. We than found a used one that only lasted about 30K, with the same results.

At that point, I (I owned the truck on the 3rd failure, bought it from Dad) had enough and found a conversition kit from Advanced Adpators that included a new bell housing for the NVG4500. ( This was in 95) Of course, the diff then failed and replaced it with a 12 bolt out of a 78.

Got ~ 150K with no issues with the drive train at that point. Now everything has rusted out though and looking to get rid of it. Engine and drive train still good, just body and frame are falling apart.

The trans in this truck is an sm465 hd 4 speed. Great transmission, just doesn't have an overdrive.

Well, 4320diesel, I wouldn't worry much about the issue I had with the tranny in my truck.

Yours doesn't sound like it is the same model. I should mention mine is a 2WD truck and the options for the transmissions back than were varied. We, (Dad and I) just picked the wrong one at that time.
