wanna change my tranny fluid. want to put amsoil in however pretty sure it still has stock fluid in tranny. is it worth flushing everything and refilling the whole thing or would i be ok just changing the int/ext filters and topping off with amsoil? any help would be great.

You can do that, but it only gets about 1/2 the fluid out. If you search the "hoot method" you will get details of how to flush it out. It's really very easy. All you need is the fluid, a hose, bucket and about 1/2 hour of time.

Hoot method worked great, it was worth it to me to do it, peace of mind.

There is a sticky at the top of this section, from Allison, regarding fluid/filter changes.

Read it. Everything you need to know is in there. It's full of FACTS from ALLISON. Then, when you're done reading that fully comprehensive and detailed document ...

come back to this thread, so you can enjoy all the OPINIONS.

Many do just the pan drop. It works and the fluids will mix ok, you just need to repeat sooner than doing a full change.

X2...I just drained the pan and spin-on filter and filled with 7.4 quarts of Torque-Drive.

Brandon,

How many miles are on the truck?

You do not need to change the internal filter unless you are adding a deep pan or trans kit of some kind. You only need to change the spin on (external filter). Its all up to you how you go about it and after reading all the opinions and documents it comes down to this:

Dont do a mechanical flush at all! Do a hoot method flush or two pan drain close to each other in mileage when changing to synthetics.

Hoot method and ext filter change will get you approx 90% fresh fluid. Do it once then your done for 25k, 50k or even 100k depending on oil choice, your climate and driving habits/conditions. It is said by many you will need 5 gallons on hand to do it properly.

Pan drain and ext filter change will get you approx 60% fresh fluid. It will take 2 gallons. It is said that to do it this way you would want to change twice to get at the 80-90% fresh fluid level. Change once then change again in approx 5-10k miles and that will get you to the 80-90% fresh fluid level. Then your good until the next one outlined in the above paragraph.

That is a cliff note version of what it all boils down to when you talk to 10 people and get 8 different answers. You choose the method and the oil and your good to go. Many people choose the hoot for two reasons one to get it done all at once and when changing to synthetics to get as much syn in when doing the change over. Two to flush a trans that may have been neglected with 75k + miles on the factory fluid.

Hope that helps a little and doesn't cause too much debate.

truck just rolled 104k. i will check into the hoot method. my brother needs a flush on his allison too. i was just worried about adding amsoil with most likely stock tranny fluid and them not reacting well together. i will be doing a full overall fluid change on transfer case and both differentials in about a month, replacing everything with amsoil products.

Amsoil will mix with all other fluids ok. They however won't honor the warranty for their fluids if the mix is too low meaning that you have too much other fluid mixed in with the Amsoil in the vehicle. They don't want to be warranting other mfgs fluids. Do the hoot and your good to go with the warranty Amsoil offers too.

I don't like the hoot method because I believe it's overkill. Allison says that drain/fill is the perfered method. If you want to get a "full" exchange, just drain/fill twice; that is exactly what Allison specifies. The double drain/fill method (when using TES-295 fluids) qualifies for the Allison servere service application. If it's good enough for that, it's good enough for all of us. They put a spin-on external filter and drain plug on the tranny for the ultimate convenience; why go to other troubles?

I do, however, like the hoot method because if you're absolutely convinced you just "have to" flush the system out, it is a SAFE flush method. Power flushes from external equipment are a potential problem. The Hoot method used the tranny to pump the fluid out of it's own accord, just as if were running down the road. The Hoot method isn't at all necessary, but it is reasonably safe, efective way to do it.

Choose as you see fit. Either method is effective; one just takes more time/money than the other.

thanks. definitely take the double fill option into consideration.
