will a 4l80e out of a 1991 454 big block be a direct fit into my 95 6.5 that came stock with the 4l80e

I know this is a transmission question, but in reality, ask a moderator to have it moved to the 6.5 section, you will get much more help there I'm sure.

You'll need to change the wiring harness in the trans to a post 93 design and it should work ok.

Different wiring harness, different lock-up solonoid, and the early transmission cases didn't have the bolt holes to mount the NSBU switch to the shift shaft. As well as 91 was manual linkage whereas 95 was cable linkage. 91-93 also used a tone wheel in the output side of the 4X4 whereas later models(94+) did not. And of course the torque converters are different.

You're right about the NSBU switch, for some stupid reason I was thinking '96 on that. :duh:

So a 91 trans will not work with a 95 because of the lack of neutral safety back up switch provisions that the 95 needs.

You'll need a trans from a 95-96 to be a bolt in deal. The 97 later trannies have different trans cooler lines and a lot of internal differences and aren't a direct swap.

so any 4l80e from a 95-96 will bolt right in right

I have a '92 4L80e from a 454 SS, bolted up to an 2003 8.1L in a rock crawler I am building. The '92 4L80e fully splined tailshaft is required for boltup to the aftermarket transfer case I am using.

The harness I am using is from the 2003. Is the only difference in the wiring the plug configuration and size? Can you change the plug on the tranny? or is it changed on the harness?

What's the role of the NSBU switch in the PCM & tranny operation. Can it be tuned out of the PCM? I will probably use a modified gated shifter to allow quick change from Drive to Reverse to get out of roll over situations quickly (more research still needed on this one)
