Hi! Im new to the forum! This is my first post, so don't kill me if i screw something up! :) Im looking at buying a Chevy 2500 with the non - turbo 6.5 in it... I believe (the guy im buying it from got it from his deceased dad and doesnt know if its a 6.2 or 6.5 so ill post in both forums) Im wondering how reliable is this motor? The motor has quite a few miles on it.. like 250,000ish.. Think it will keep on tickin? If not, whats a decent used one cost? I'm looking at pulling a trailer thats 5000lbs (car and trailer weight combined). Can this engine pull it without a problem?

Thanks
Darryl

should be able to pull 5000 without an issue. what kind of trailer is it ? What intrigues me about your post is the non-turbo. what year is it? Could be a 6.2

Its a 92. Could be a 6.2 im not sure. But I surely didnt see or hear a turbo. The guy thought it was a 6.5 but wasnt sure.... Trailer is open, 16ft

My 91 6.2 made it to 310,000 and still ran strong. I junked it because it was rusted badly and the tranny went out.I plan on reusing the engine in another truck. It should pull 5000 lbs without a problem but don't use overdrive when pulling. If it's a non-turbo it probobly has the 4l60[700r4] transmission. That is the weak link.Tranny cooler is a must.

Take a picture of the top of the engine and post it, there should be some geeks who can identify it.

The 6.5, most of them still have the 6.5 Turbo Cover on top in the middle.

The 6.2 usually have a round big filter in the middle.

Vin# should solve the mystery.....if it's the original engine.

I have a 1996 C2500 with 110K miles, and a 1996 C3500 with 215K miles. They both run very similar, and have plenty of power, 40 to 45 pounds oil pressure when fully warmed up, and they don't smoke, no knocks or other bad noises. The 2500 came from a lawn fertilizer company (one owner) and the 3500 has had numerous owners. Find the thread that tells you how to assess the condition of the truck, and check it out. As long as there are no catastrophic problems like rod knock, blue smoke, non-operating tranny etc it probably is a decent truck. It may need some attention, but anything old does.
