Does anyone know if it's the same ECM for the ('80) 5.7l diesel as for the ('88) 6.2? I'm converting to a 6.2 and I'm not sure if the old control module (not the glowplug relay) is usable at all... Perhaps it's possible to "re-wire" the modules socket to get an adequate function or are there some extended functions in newer ecm:s that's required for the newer engine?

I wouldn't even try. Just build a manual switch.

The '80 5.7D powered vehicles didn't use a full-fledged "ECM", just a controller. It's only function is to operate the timing and latching circuits of the glo-plugs. No magic, no connection to any other electrical circuits in the vehicle.
The 5.7 uses a similar controller in appearance to the 6.2, but.......that's where the similarity stops! They look the same but the internals are different. The wiring diagrams for the two vehicles will show the differences. Use a 6.2 controller and change the wiring per the diagram for the year of engine you are installing. It's not hard, just have to read and follow the wiring. The pins on the controller are numbered and must be matched to the wiring diagram, which shows the pin numbers and color coding of the wiring.
Or....you could just do what the guys suggest and hook it up to a manual switch!

Great info! Sounds like you're a real mechanic...I'll look into this when I get my manual and wiring diagrams and try to get it work. After all I've worked with more advanced (and) digital engine systems... But never with american cars before, so I'd rather ask. Again, thanks for helping out!
