My allison 1000 PK series went out yesterday. Was on the highway and felt some jerks forward, than it started letting go at progressively lower speeds. Mechanic said clutch 1 and 2 are out and I need a new tranny. Any advice on where to get a good price on a stock allison, or one that won't go out?

Thanks,
Brent:mad:

Why not get it rebuilt with something in your price range? It would be cheaper depending on what you do to it.

Might as well rebuild/beef it up. Especially if your duramax is more than stock hp. Contact Mike L.

get a second opinion. Im not 100% convinced your mechanic knows what he is talking about.

what were the other symptoms? Any check engine light? Did you still have reverse? What was the trans temp?

Did your mechanic remove and disassemble the trans, or just make assumptions?

I only run the Super Chips Mico Tuner on Safe Tow. Was not towing, going 80 MPH on Interstate when it started outside temps at 44*.The trans temp was up to around 200-210 range when I pulled over the first time it let go to check fluids. Fluid level was good, color good. My Superchips didn't show any codes at that time. The mechanic said it shows codes now for clutches 2-3 when they were 1:1. It got to where it was letting go(felt is spinning under me) at 30 MPH and I pulled over to look at the U joints. I did have reverse when I parked it for towing, but it is out now at the shop. Had to push it outside today. I don't have $ for new stock alli much less upgrades. I do trust my mechanic but I don't assume he is a transmission specialist. He has replaced transfer case for me and done a lot more w/ no problems so far. Best offer I have found so far was $2,000 for a ReTran from Allison dealer and that quote is not solid yet, the tech has to call to check in the morning and get back to me. Every other alli I have found is around $3,500 Anyone who can rebuild in my area please PM me as I am open to suggestions. But I am a residential builder/remodeler with no work in the last 5 weeks so money is realy tight now.

I don't know, I am asking for advice. I cut wood for a living. I hear what you are saying but am unsure what to do about it. Are you saying get it could be repaired or rebuilt somewhere? How much does that run? Can they tell upfront the costs before tearing into it?

to get an accurate estimate, the trans needs to be disassembled and inspected for an accurate qoute.

That doesnt really mean anything IMO, im still hesitant to say he is diagnosing it correctly, the allison is not like any other automatic in how it works or how you diagnose/fix it. Have your mechanic tell you the actual codes. Theres going to be a P0700, and a couple more in addition to that.

What happends if you unplug the TCM (transmission control module, its the box mounted on the fan shroud with two connectors going into it, red and clear/white). If you unplug it and try to drive the truck does anything happen?

I had an Allison certified transmission shop tow it in to rebuild it. He said the burnt clutches are due to my chip and will go again. He can rebuild w/ shift kit and triple lock torque converter for around $3,500 which is less than a new tranny. Thanks for the heads up, you helped me save about $1,500 today. I appreciate it. He also said now I can turn up my tuner and smoke people at lights w/out worrying about it.

I sure wonder why the two clutch pacs were fried with just a minor towing tune? With the new TC and shift kit (which one are they using?) I would be hesitant to put any more power to the trans. The TC may be able to take it depending on the manufacturer but the trans most likely will still not be able to hold any substantial amount of added power.

We may not know the whole story. Obviously if you add more hp/tq than stock you can run into engine/trans problems. If you run a 40 hp tune though I see no reason why the engine/trans combo can't handle it. I am curious what tune hp it was?

3500 dollars will get you a fully built suncoast III.

Make sure he uses name brand parts and not a generic converter/shift kit etc...

http://www.suncoastconverters.com/gmc/gm_products.html

For 2200 dollars you get high performance aftermarket clutchpacks and steels, a suncoast triple disc torque converter (with warranty), a transgo shift kit, and a new internal/external filter.

I would definetly go that route. Buy the kit from Mike L (he is a vendor on the board and knows everything there is to know about the allison; he is a great guy and will not steer you wrong), bring it to your allison shop, and have them rebuild the trans with the suncoast kit. Im not sure how much your shop will charge you for labor; but say 1,000 dollars, plus fluid, and you are up to your 3,500 dollar original estimate, except you get a fully built trans with a name-brand converter and shift kit INSTEAD of stock clutches, a shift kit, and converter like you were initially quoted for. :)

I run a Superchips Max Microtuner. I think it adds like 10% hp and torque max which at most would be like 30 some HP. And I can tell you the clutches were going because I heard and felt them spinning out and the truck stopped going. I think the trans guy is going to add shift kit and clutches, would be strange not to. I will talk to the guy tomorrow to see what parts he is using.

Thanks
Brent

Don't use the BD shift kit. It's worthless. Go with a Transgo which is included in a trans build up from SC but can be bought seperately. I still am concerned with why those clutch pacs were burned up with just a small tune. Something else could be wrong and needs to be addressed.

Do you have a check engine light? there must be some codes.

Reverse out--?? Might just be the NSBU switch.

Does it say, "Shift Inhibited"?

Be fore you spend a ton, have the codes read.:)
