: TSB: Improved fuel filter for all duramax's
Ridgerunner436 03-05-2009, 05:19 AM A new TSB just came out from GM on March 2nd stating that they have released a new fuel filter to address many of the issues we have been dealing with including 150-200% longer life.
I have tried to attach it. Hopefully I've done it correctly.:)
alleghenyrose 03-05-2009, 07:01 AM Is it going to known as TP1298C in keeping with their old designations??, and what will the new change interval be??
Curious minds want to know.
Horsehaulin 03-05-2009, 07:16 AM According to the VINs section it includes LB7, LLY, LBZ and LMM. This is going to be a hard filter to find for a short time I think.
Looks like the bulletin says the part number to be 12633243.
Just called my dealer, they dont have it in stock, but they can get it to me next day. It is a new part to the system, but GM does have it out and that is the part number above.
Horsehaulin 03-05-2009, 07:16 AM GM Part #12633243
Horsehaulin 03-05-2009, 07:18 AM Also moved to Maint. and Fluids.
Great info RR!
07DuramaxHD 03-05-2009, 08:45 AM I just looked up the part # on gmpartsdirect.com and it's showing a price of $30.88 and a description of filter kit...hope that helps all you others out there! I'm gonna have to get ready and order me one!
dnewton3 03-05-2009, 12:05 PM Gentlemen, thank you all very much for the quick and good info!
I'll be curious to see 1) how quickly GM dealers stock it and at what cost, and 2) how long until the aftermarket cathes up and provides a reasonably priced equivilant!
dnewton3 03-05-2009, 12:09 PM btw - I just sent an email to Wix asking about the new filter and it's specs. I'll let you know if I get anything back soon.
Accord_boy619 03-05-2009, 12:20 PM With it being longer life, would the "life counter" on the DIC need to be reprogrammed?
schwinn68 03-05-2009, 12:28 PM I wonder how they plan to make it longer life? Won't a tank of bad fuel still destroy a filter just the same as always. I'm having trouble thinking outside the box on this one. Anybody have any ideas?
SAYWHAT 03-05-2009, 02:05 PM If the filter is finer and catches more contaminates it will plug up sooner, hence a larger sized filter that will hopefully last the 15,000 miles required of the filter that we are now using. As far as getting a bad batch of fuel, its probably going to ruin any filter regardless.
schwinn68 03-05-2009, 02:10 PM I tried to open the attached file of the first poster but couldn't. What does this say or show besides a new part number? How much bigger could they make the filter? There isn't much room in there now for the filter we have.
For those that cant open the file I posted the bulletin yesterday in this section.

TOTHEMAX! 03-05-2009, 03:11 PM cool ill have to call the dealer and see if they have any..
they had none and no info
JIMMMY 03-05-2009, 04:06 PM Of course I have a new current (now obsolete?) filter on the shelf....... Doesn't pay to buy these things in bulk - parts numbers changed twice in less than 2 years now.........
Thinking the one on the shelf becomes an emergency spare and switch to the new in 10K more miles in about 8 months when I hit 30K.
Same here..lol...but we have the new ones on order..
TOTHEMAX! 03-05-2009, 05:38 PM so these new filters just last longer? are they still a 5 micron filter?
any other differences?
chargeit 03-06-2009, 12:35 PM I have two of the older style and waiting to see what the specs are on the new unit.
Common sense tells you longer life is proportional to either overall size or size of particulate filtered. Since the aftermarket has not come out with a new media, I doubt GM has anything magic.
The realease graphs show little emprical data. I would specualte they have determined that larger particles are not "too" harmful and thus increased micron size filtering giving longer filter life since it is not catching as much and does not plug as easily with the bio parifins.
I dont trust GM (or any mfg) any further than I can throw one otheir engines as they continue to compromise the long term durability with short term solutions.
Time will tell, dont get too excited..........

Well said !
JIMMMY 03-06-2009, 02:11 PM It reads "The new COALESCER filter.....Greatly improved removal of emulsified water - a major contributor to fuel system issues..."
Sounds like it can remove the emulsified water better than the previous filter media........ And we all know any water that gets by can damage the injectors........
Glad I have always run Stanadyne and not an additive that emulsifies the water.
The new media sounds good - would like to see more about it in writing from GM....
CRASHNBURN 03-06-2009, 11:48 PM Racor # R50216. Only buy through a dealer right now. :(
Old filter was pff5544 (4th gen)
Kejsj30 03-10-2009, 09:54 PM So does this mean that we will have increased difficulties with fuel icing issues this winter?
phazar 03-10-2009, 10:58 PM i heard it is a 1 micron filter
Interesting.. 1 micron...i can't find any further info from gm yet..
TOTHEMAX! 03-10-2009, 11:18 PM wow if it is a 1 micron that is very low. wonder how well its going to preform in the winter?
tileman2003 03-10-2009, 11:30 PM Maybe it's the miracle filter...
TIM Z 03-10-2009, 11:47 PM The filter media is made of Sham-WoW.
chargeit 03-10-2009, 11:56 PM i heard it is a 1 micron filter
From the TSB:
Provides the following benefits / improvements over the existing dual pleat design:
•
150-200% increase in service life, depending on contaminant type
•
Improved fuel system protection with some premium diesel and B5 biodiesel blends
•
Equivalent coarse water droplet removal efficiency of previous design
•
Greatly improved removal of emulsified water - a major contributor to fuel system issues
I hope you are being sarcastic on the 1 micron, reading between the lines, 150-200% is conditional on "contaminant type" is very ambigious.
Improved premium and bioD protection reads - hopefully it does not get clogged with the parifin build up as much
Equivant coarse water - no change
emulsifed water removal - improvement
There was nothing the the TSB or any other searches on an improvement of particulate filtering. Many filters will remove some particulate at the 1 micron level but EFFECTIVE (90-99.9% removal), I doubt.

i think your on to something there....
dozerboy 03-12-2009, 05:32 PM Sweet then when its time to change out the filter I can cut it open and use the filter material to wash my truck.....I love my Sham-WoW....:coolnana:
CRASHNBURN 04-18-2009, 11:35 AM Anybody find anything more about this new filter or buy one yet???
axlenut 04-19-2009, 01:29 PM Great news. This is the best site around. Just purchased 6 of those new filters (AC Delco TP-3012, GM 98081884) at www.diesefiltersonline.com for $199.09 with shipping. Purchasing 6 drops the price from $42.48 ea to $31.69 ea saving $10.79. Shipping cost $8.95 or less than the savings on one filter.
The new filter may not be as important for me, with the Nicktane CAT filter ahead of the OEM filter, and living where temperatures seldom freeze, but it can't hurt.
From reading the blurb I read between the lines that this filter may be addressing the growing use of biodiesel blends which may have a higher water content.

The website did not work...
Horsehaulin 04-20-2009, 04:24 PM It compete's with forum vendors, better that it doesnt.
tileman2003 04-20-2009, 10:59 PM It compete's with forum vendors, better that it doesnt.
Which vendors carry them???
dozerboy 04-21-2009, 06:54 PM None probably carry the new filter, but they sell the others so thats "competing".
tileman2003 04-22-2009, 01:00 AM That makes sense... I just want to know where to get the new filter, and not pay dealer prices, give a vendor here my business, and not step on any toes...
Horsehaulin 04-22-2009, 06:46 AM Merchant, and Kennedy carry fuel filters for sure and even our local Amsoil vendor. I am sure all three of them can get the new filter.
