I normally drive around 82 to 84 on the interstate and get around 12 mpg. i always belieived that those people claiming they got high mpg were lying. Now i beleive that they lie about how fast or easy they drive. I drove a full tank of gas as easy on the throttle as i could be and drove 64 mph on the highway and got 18 mpg. i was curious if it was my truck that could not get these high numbers while driving a little faster and my fathers duramax got the same. i tested this the old fastion way and not by the dic. it amazes me that people will claim 20 mpg while pulling a 6000lb trailer. i think they dont know how to compute there mpg or there just really full of ****! I also tried the same route with my fathers powerstoke and got 1 mpg less. I personnaly dont think the added mpg is worth driving that slow but i geuss someone that drives alot of miles everyday this might same them alot of money each month. i alos found that i was getting about 1/2 better mpg then what the dic was reading. this is proabably due to the 265 tires i have on it instead of stock.

I will say that it is pretty serious business to call someone a liar. :badidea: Believe what you wish and keep your mouth shut would be a better approach. I'm one of the high mpg guys and have never lied about it. Not all rigs are built alike nor are they driven alike.

I got 18.956mpg for the first 3000 miles of mixed driving. I live in a mostly rural area and that included some 300 or so miles of interstate driving at about 65mph. I'm not a little old lady either but flying large and very expensive jet aircraft for decades taught me to be easy on equipment and to protect my fuel supply.

You may believe or not believe and nothing changes except in your own mind.

what i said was those guys that drive 75mph and pull 6000lb trailers saying they get 20 mpg doing so is abunch of bull. i also stated that i also got 18 mpg doing 65. so basically you pretty much agreed with me. im sure you would agree that your truck driving at high speed pulling trailers would not get your 18.9 mpg. i also said i beleive that they would not get the high milage driving fast. as you pointed out, you drive 65 mph to do it. so im not sure why you seem upset about my statements because it seems to me that we agree.

I always get over 25 mpg,and you can to. Get up to speed on a level road, hit your reset button on your average m.p.g., it should read about 25 mpg or more, if it doesn’t just take you foot off the accelerator till the milage climbs up there. Easy. Now if your milage drops below 25mpg after you accelerate - just repeat the process, that way you’ll always get 25 mpr or more.

It is hard to believe anyone would get 20mpg towing any sizeable. My 05 D\A 4x4 CC SB (1,500 miles) got 13 towing a 9,000 lbs travel trailer doing 60-65 up and down steep grades but mostly on flat road.

I commute with mine everyday, 60-70mph and avg 19-22 depending on the commute. That's both manual and with the dic. Last week I babied it, left early and late avoiding traffic and got 22.9 during 400 miles which included some in town driving, 58 stop lights round trip, etc. Maybe I got lucky :confuzeld but I'm really pleased with the mpg.

I can drive 70 and get 19-19.5 on the hiway. Get 17-17.5 in town driving. This is all hand calculated. I really beleive that 12 is reasonable when towing if you keep it 65 or below. Will find that out this summer. Just be glad you have a diesel and get 12 because the 8.1 running 80 would be 8-10.

I have never read a claim on the forum of 20mpg while towing.

I get 13-14 towing my Bass boat regulary. I have never seen 20mpg unloaded yet. But that's because i'm never unloaded while driving on the highway.

Fuel mileage is a direct result of weight, wind resistance and the attitude of the driver. Towing my 13,500 5th wheeler in the southwest (75-80 and leading the pack) I get a whopping 7.2 MPG. Same trailer, 60-65 in hilly areas 9-9.5 Empty truck with driver attitude 12-15. Empty truck @55 like old lady, 18-18.5. You want to play, you got to PAY.

I get 27mpg running 85 up and down hills towing 9500lbs, hand calculated 4 times with 3 different calculators......................:lol:

I agree with oteo. I don't think people lie but I do think people either don't know how to calcualte or they don't tell the whole story.

My best tank has been 15.2 mpg. My worst was under 10mpg. I average around 13.2 mpg and get about 300 miles/tank before fill up (7% factor calculated for the 285s). I drive 85 miles round trip unloaded to work and the cruise is set on 76mph running 2150rpm. The mileage has never changed and I now have 20k on the truck.

With my LB7 the faster you drove it the better the mileage. This LLY seems the exact opposite. Since I like to drive fast I miss my LB7 :o:.................

Its easy to get reasonable MPG driving very slow, but with every mile/hour faster the MPG will decrease because of the higher wind resistence. Stop and go make things worst because its a very heavy truck.
I don't understand people stating that the old LB7 got better MPG driver faster - this makes no sense at all and is against all diesel driving rules. That could be possible only it you lug the engine permanent driving too slow, but the allison should compensate for that a bit.

If you leave the efficient operating range of the diesel motor you will pay more for fuel - this is true for any diesel vehicle with any motor. I have owned many different diesel vehicles all behaved the same way.:exactly:

I think could belive this if you get on the highway set the cruise at 70 and never touch it until the next fill up. I have never taken an unloaded trip that long without pulling over or mixing in some city driving. At 18.5mpg you would not need to fill up for 425 miles :eek: (assuming you burn 23gal). I have never been able to make it past 350 miles on a tank....................and my usual fill up point day in and day out is 300 miles at aprox 22 gals.

The sweet spot on the LB7 is around 62MPG. My CC/SB with 265's recorded a calculated 21MPG running in this range while on a trip. 70-75MPH produces 18-19 depending upon conditions and fuel. Anything faster and I drop below 18.

I get 11-12 towing my 7000lb travel trailer 65-70MPH. I think the wind resistance is a bigger factor than the weight. I also get 12MPG towing my 3000lb snowmobile trailer which has a shape not too different from the tt.

I can see a 2wd, stock-tired 6-speed getting up in the 22.5-23 range due to the higher gearing, lower weight and lower drag of the smaller tires.

I also found that my MPG is better running 60/55 rather than 50/45 PSI in the F/R tires. The ride is a little worse but MPG is up .5 or more in comparable conditions.

Increases the requirement of additional hp to move the truck the exact same speed prior to the lift being installed. Additional fuel may be required to generate the hp, depending on where in the powerband the truck was running prior to the lift.

I usually get about 336 miles out of my tank. I thought these long beds where suppose to be 34 gal tanks but it doesn't look like mine is. I've only seen 25/26 gal

It is a 34 gallon tank.

Wind resistance goes up by the cube of velocity.

Turbulent or laminar airflow would have an effect too. A lift would give you even more turbulent airflow than you already have in a truck.

Going by fuel receipts and map derived mileage (don't trust your speedo), I got just under 18mpg going from California to Florida at 7700lb. Speed were from 0-96mph, and have the warnings to prove it. Most travel was 75-85mph. Refueling approx every 400mi.

If someone is telling me that a broken-in stock 2500HD or 3500SRW won't touch 20mpg at the legal speed limit, they either have something wrong with their truck, or there is something they are not telling. Low tire pressure, M/T tires, lifted, undeclared weight, dually, headwind, excessive mountains, etc. Cruise control mileage is about 1 mpg less in my truck. Your foot works better when trying to save fuel.

Maybe I got a "Wednesday" truck, but I doubt it. Now CITY mileage?? Anywhere from 9 to 14 depending. Same for towing, 11 to 18 depending.

Like my thread states... I am above 15,000+ Mi. and now have 4 tanks using Lucas Fuel Additive w/ Edge Level 3 x 1 and 285's.... Doing calculations by HAND and filling up at specified Low Fuel Light to the filler neck top...


12.5 mpg.... Driving like Granny... Checked Codes... NONE beside EGR...

Well, you can read what you want from this, but it's what I've recorded over the past several weeks. You'll notice a couple of long distance trips if you look at the dates. All mileage is with the truck unloaded - I don't have the boat it's supposed to tow yet.

The city driving is about 80% on the loop, 20% stoplight to stoplight, with the cruise on 60 mph (speed limit) while on the loop. The long trips I took were at traveled with the cruise set to the speed limit (65 mph usually).

I get my fuel at a shell truck stops, so I ensure I get fresh fuel. I'm sure the others (chevron, BP, etc.) have great truck stops too, but this is the one I use.

I don't have any performance mods - I even have the stock air filter. I have the original 245/75R16 tires, I maintain my engine and rotate the tires twice/year (usually every 7-8000 miles). She's not even a year old and I have over 20,000 miles. Oh well, so much for making that warranty last the full term.

Kendall69...that dosen't make any sence!!! If you keep on re-setting the d.i.c it won't make a difference on your mpg...the numbers will go over 25, but that's for it to level it's self out....it will fall below 25....plus when it goes up and down like that it's not your actual mpg...I don't trust it at all, cause i will look at it for an entire trip and then i will hand calculate it and i have never seen close to the mileage that it shows

15.619 MPG hand calculated. 350 miles and 22 gallons.
DIC read 15.7 I beleive.

This is mixed driving Highway and Local doing the speed limit. mostly short drives to work about 15 miles. The truck barely gets up to temp.

I towed a 6-7k 20 ft enclosed trailer for about 2k of the miles on the truck and averaged around 11 mpg. All Highway running from 65-75 MPH.

I am pleased with the mileage so far. Have not run the truck on long drive uloaded yet but get to that in a week or so.

Kinda boring to take a quarter horse out for a trot. If you're not able to reach the pedal slide your seat up and give it hell! We all love our mods and the power of this truck, after all, if we were that concerned with MPG we would all get a VW diesel. I've tried driving different ways and really can't get any better than 15.5 combined, maybe a chip will help correct, plus I'm running 285's. Besides, these are $40K+ trucks, might as well get our money's worth and have fun while driving, the worst thing you can do is drive like your grandma with a high performance vehicle!!

I just got the truck yesterday and had a 160 mile stretch at 65mph.From start (10 miles), DIC said 15mpg. From finish (170 miles), DIC said 15.8. I'm assuming it will continue to go up?

Is that good fuel mileage for a brand new duramax?

Just finished a trip that was quite interesting fuel wise. It was the first trip with the Predator; I was concerned when I arrived there. I feel better today. All hand calculated btw. This was from Boise to Spanaway via I-84 and I-5.

For the drive there: 2500 HD, 3 people, 140# alfalfa in bed. ~14,000 gooseneck horse trailer with 2 horses and a mini horse, 2 horse carts on the hay rack. We had a head wind most of the way and ran around 72 most of the way. The cops were everywhere so it was hard to make good time. Plus, we had a stiff headwind most of the way. I calculcated each fillup but the end result was about 6.8 MPG

For the return trip, we had one less horse (delivered there) One less cart (returned the borrowed cart) We put our cart in the trailer. On I-5, some asshole cop gave my wife a ticket for driving in the left lane. Probably shouldn't have been there but oh well. Also, he told us the truck speed limit applied to us and we drove the rest of the way through WA at 60. Once in OR, I sped up to 70 and held there. The winds were calm. For that drive, we came in at right around 10 MPG.

Last year, we were running closer to 8 MPG which I attribute to spending more time in 4th gear because the 13-14K was just a little too much to pull up the hills in 5th.

I never got over 16.5 until a buddy challenged me to try. I managed 19.5mpg with the cruise set at 75mph. I realized it's not neccasarily how fast you drive but how quick you get to 75. Accellerate like you have a broken ankle, if you can!:muahaha:

Can the dic be trusted to give an accurate read on the amount of fuel used? It has been for me. I believe the range of miles left will quit working at around 30 miles, then it says "low fuel". When I filled up I was a 1/3 of a gallon from tank capacity. :ro)

actually, I went 218 miles on 12.4 gallons. 200 of which were highway. That calculated is 17.6 mpg. Does that sound good for a brand new duramax? What should I expect if I continue to drive her like that and after 5000 miles?
