I am buying a 5-speed manual out of a 91 Chevy 1500 with a 350SBC for $350 Canadian. That price includes tranny, drive shaft, and the hydraulic plunger that disengages the clutch. Does this seem like a reasonable amount? I am doing this because after driving my truck and hearing how loud the engine is screaming at 100KM/h, i knew i needed either a higher gear ratio, or OD tranny, and i just happened to stumble upon this 5-speed first. Just have a few questions. First, Will the clutch and pressure plate i currently have for the 4-speed that is in my truck work, or will i have to get one specifically for this tranny? And secondly, what else do i need to do to put it in my truck (85 3/4 ton 4-speed standard) Also, do i need a different transmission crossover?

is it a granny low 5-speed(nv4500)? or just a 5-speed(nv3500)?
The nv3500's aren't as strong as the nv4500's.

I'm 99% sure it's a nv3500. When i looked at it the only thing i could see on it as far as numbers/letter goes is "GM8679097", And after looking on the internet, it looks identical to a 3500, so that is what it has to be. Also, after looking at it, i have only one major concern. The hydraulic plunger to disengage the clutch is just below where the starter goes, and i was wondering, will the plunger get in the way of the starter at all??

I dont know for sure, but I believe the starter will not be an issue. If it is, just get a high torque starter from a 6.5. They are smaller, but will bolt right onto your 6.2.

k, thanks for the help. I removed the 4-speed tranny that was in the truck tonight, and will probably install the 5-speed tranny on saturday. Tomorow, i have to a new hole about 6 inches back in the floor boards because of the new required shifter location. Once i get the install done, I am sure i will be much happier with the rpms, and just hope the tranny hold up.

If you have any problems with the swap -- Shoot me an email at Russell@Zieglerdigital.ca
I ran an NV3500 behind my 6.2L in my 86 offroad truck for a long time without any problems. I also run an NV4500 in my 80 GMC behind a turbocharged 6.2L.
If you need any parts, I have absolutely everything required on hand (including an 04 internal slave NV3500) to perform the swap. Kept everything from my 86 when I parted it out after the engine failed.
