I have been looking at the predator for reading codes, checking balance rates, and monitoring the data stream. I already have the juice and have no complaints about it, more than enough hp/tq for the towing/driving I do. I would want the predator for the diagnostic functions only.

Good question, you might want to check out the classifieds on this forum. There are sometimes locked LB7 predators cheap. This means they can be used for diagnostics, but not power upgrades.

I know a LB7 Predator will reset codes on an LLY.

Any of the GM Predator tuners will check and erase codes on any other GM OBD-II systems. I know for certain that an LLY Predator will read balance rates and almost all live data on an LB7.

However, a GM Predator can't be used on non-GM OBD-II systems as a scan tool, so make sure that the Predator you buy is indeed made for a GM application. If I were you, I'd just get a model specific to your truck and enjoy. Download the lowest tune, and you'll be smiling from ear to ear--without any theoretical mileage loss.
