I've got some questions on the newer style high-rise hood that Chevrolet has gone to in the last year or two.

Personally, I hate it. It makes the truck look less agressive to me, so I'm thinking of replacing (http://www.keystonerestyling.com/) it. I like the GHG117, but I'd like to know more about the reason for the hood change before I go replacing it and possibly running into problems down the road.

It doesn't seem like the engine physically needs the extra room the hood provides, so was it done for some mechanical reason? To address overheating? Maybe give more airflow to the engine?

If it came down to it, could I purchase one of the low-rise hoods for an older truck and install it on my truck?

Does anyone know?

I don't know the answer to your question. However, I would like to be the first to place a bid for your OEM hood.

As far as I know the only reason for the change was because people wanted the 'meaner look' of the earlier HD's and you couldn't tell at a quick glance between the half ton or 2500 series.

New hood looks like a afterthought. Sort of like a house that has had a addition tacked on to it that wasn't planned in the original design. Only reason for the new one was to satisfy some who desired a more aggresive look in the HD's.

if you put an 03/04 hood on an 05 you would also have to change the grill i believe. there are some threads talking about putting the 05 hood on an earlier model so you might talk to one of them and just reverse the process.

It's interesting how GM decides to make these changes. I could not
understand why they changed the 01-02 front end. It's gonna be a
long time before I sell mine. I don't like the new body styling :(

when my dad traded his 99 2500 for a 2002 duramax, that was the first thing i noticed, they took away the nice chome inserts and add the tough plastic mesh look -:t ...... the hood also looked like an after thought when compared to the regular 1500 2500 look. -:t

then in 03 when i thought it was bad enough, it got worse. -:t -:t .

05 they finally put chrome back into the grill, but still hate the chevy look in general.

my gracias to GMC for doing an awesome job on the front of those truck, esp the 1500 without the gay hood. very very refined look and i love it. just wish the gmc had a bowtie option on the grill.

Could the higher hood ( more air flow out through the opening at the base of the windshield) help with the cooling problems on the 04.5lly's? You know, more air out-allows more air in through the radiator. Just a thought.

IdahoRob: That was my first thought also, though I'm not sure. If that is the case, I'd really hate to run into overheating problems later, especially when I'm pulling my 30' Cabin Cruiser boat. :)

How much of a hurry are you guys in for the hood?

Long story short: I bought my truck about two weeks ago, and I kid you not, no less than three days after I bought it, some useless pile of human flesh decided to key the entire passenger side of my truck.

Insurance is going to cover it, but since I had planned on getting a custom paint job in a few months anyway... I figured I might as well save myself some money and time in the long run, and then use what the insurance company is going to spend getting the original paint fixed and put it towards the custom paint job.

That said, I have no need for two hoods, so I'm definitely interested in selling it, but it won't be for about a month (estimating). If you're not in a gigantic hurry, we can work something out, for sure! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Sorry to hear about your truck.

What kind of hood are you going to replace your stocker with?

If the two guys in line before me bail, let me know as I thought it would be a cool upgrade for my '04.

Thanks

I'm looking at one of the Ram-Air style hoods from Keystone Restyling: www.keystonerestyling.com/datacat/uploads/ghg117bg.jpg (http://www.keystonerestyling.com/datacat/uploads/ghg117bg.jpg)

Nothing says "Rawr, get outta my way!" quite like that... Plus, it fits in with what I'm thinking for my new paint scheme. I'll see if I can't get some pics up on my site this weekend, and maybe some of the concepts we've been working on for the paint scheme. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

What part of the country are you in and what color is the hood? White?

The key thing sucks:mad:

I'm out...want a white one and I'm too cheap to have one painted.

Or...I could find black doors/tailgate and be the Anti-CHP.):h

Hate to add this, but after seeing a picture of the 2006 1500's, there won't be any difference between the 1500's and the HD's anymore....Censored
