: Remote starter woes
DDDrew 04-12-2005, 11:35 PM Hey fellas. Anyone had a Compustar remote starter installed? The problem is that the passlock indicator light on the dash won't go out. I had the dealer reset the computer but the truck shuts down right after starting so he had to leave it. The truck is an 03 GMC DMax. The installer had a heck of a time with the install as this was the first DMax he's done. What did he miss out on? He did install the GM passlock self learn module along with another module. Does anyone know what gives here? Did he just mess up with hooking it up wrong or ??? Anything I can tell him with others' experiences would help. Thanks for any help. Drew.
Max Power 04-13-2005, 12:25 AM Could be a number of things. In my opinion I would get rid of the self learn resistor module and go with a data module. Something like this: http://www.bypasskit.com/product.aspx?prodid=GMDL-BP
I would never use a resister type bypass again. They are always trouble at sometime down the road.
Nick_Johnson 04-13-2005, 11:24 AM Where would you buy the remotless starter from? I never knew they made them.
DDDrew 04-13-2005, 12:29 PM Nick, can't you read? theres nothing remoteless about it, starts fine, just leaves the light on. There's someone home here.
sprintmod1 04-13-2005, 02:22 PM PM BlueOx03, he installs the Compustars. He did the install on my truck. First rate, knows his stuff, and should be able to help you. Have mine for a few months now with no problems!
DDDrew 04-13-2005, 03:49 PM Thanks sprintmod1 I'll try to hook up with him on here somewhere.
Max Power 04-13-2005, 04:02 PM The brand of the remote start doesn't really change the serurity issue. There is something wrong if you are getting a light. Either the resistance is wrong or there is an ignition wire isn't being powered up. It isn't something you are going to be able to diagnose yourself without know a lot more information about the system. Like to start with what kind of security bypass is being used.
sprintmod1 04-13-2005, 04:41 PM DDDrew,
On second thought, and after considering what MaxPower is saying, I would go back to the installer and get him to do it correctly even if it means he needs to speak with tech support at Compustar. I did a lot of research before having mine done (even considered doing it myself, but chickened out at the last moment) and it should have the data bus put in it like Max Power suggested.
You paid alot of good money for a product that should be very good and work CORRECTLY! Take it back to him and get him to do it right. You may even need to talk with Compustar yourself, the numbers should be on the warranty card you received.
Good Luck!
DDDrew 04-13-2005, 05:09 PM I've got an appointment tomorrow morning to get this thing solved and I'm not leaving till its done right. It's like you said about paying big bucks for it and doing it right. Hopefully he's done some homework on this thing.
Kennedy 04-14-2005, 11:10 AM Some times it is best to move on and locate an EXPERIENCED installer. These things are not rocket science, but what I do see is there is an install, and there is a SUPER CLEAN install. I had Doug and Chris at www.auto-d.com in Manitowoc do my 2005 and my mother's 2003 Lesabre after I did my own 2002 and buddies 2004. My installs would be classed more like cobble jobs compared to theirs...
thoorn 04-14-2005, 11:21 AM I had a similar problem with a remote start. The dealer installed it. It was an Audiovox. This thing never worked right. Sometimes it would start and then shutdown, wait 10 seconds and then repeat the process. Sometimes it just wouldn't start at all. Sometimes it would leave the passlock light lit. Sometimes it would unlock all doors and other times just the drive door. Basically it had a mind of its own and was just plainly a piece of junk. I had the dealer, who actually had someone else install it, check all the wiring after the first occurance. They only recrimped some wires and check connections. It started up again and this time I had them replace the entire controller. It continued with the problems so I had the dealer take it out and give me my money back. They didn't like that part because all of this took place over about 8 months (1 of the months the truck was at the dealer waiting for injectors). Well, short of it, I don't think the Duramax is a easy to put a remote start on as most installers think. I miss not having it, but I don't miss the problem even more. Anyways, I had a similar problem with a different brand so I think it is definitely install related. I imagine someone has had a successful install.
Max Power 04-14-2005, 11:26 AM The Duramax is one of the easiest vehicles to put a remote start in if you have the right equipment. I would rather do a GM truck then any other vehicle out there.
Crimp connectors should be illegal. Never allow anything but soldering.
SmoknDmax 04-14-2005, 01:32 PM I can back up Max Power's claim that installing a remote start on these trucks is pretty straight forward. Even a back yard mechanic like me was able to follow the directions and pictures to hook up a quality remote starter. I researched for a long time on different brands and finally bought my unit from Max Power. He included very clear instructions that realistically anyone could follow if they know how to solder. The other key piece is the newer trucks use a data module to control the security system. Since it actually communicates with the truck instead of trying to fool it into thinking the key is in the ignition, it seems to be very reliable.
JJs DuMax 04-14-2005, 03:11 PM MaxPower states "Crimp connectors should be illegal. Never allow anything but soldering."<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->My 5ver had crimp connections on the brake wiring, guess what happened? Ditto the crimp connector kill! JJ :)
DDDrew 04-14-2005, 07:37 PM Thanks for all the replies fellas. I took it back today and they yanked it all out and orderd the bypass module that was shown in the 2nd post to this thread. The installer me he wanted to get that one to start with but was told by his boss the other would do. I also made sure all the connections were soldered. The guy says thats the only way he does it. I have to go to the dealer to reset the passlock so the indicator light will go out. It remained on after they yanked the other module out. This had better rectify the B.S. with this or......!!!!!?????
