I am in the process of testing a great air box kit from a company called S&B Filters. It is a neat little product that has actually increased my LLY's fuel mileage by 1 full mpg. I was impressed enough that I have a second kit on the way. The best thing is it is certified ISO 5011. It uses a cleanable filter in a clear lid air box. The company is really working hard to make sure their stuff works. I hope to get a proto-type air tube from them soon.

Check them out at www.sbfilters.com (http://www.sbfilters.com/)

The box looks kind of like another brand I have seen on a few trucks and the filter looks just like K&N... Wonder where they got their ideas from?

I have the K & N kit for the lb7 and the S & B filter and box look like better quality. I have not seen the other box you are talking about.
S & B's website says they have been doing this for over 30 years. Maybe the other people got their ideas from them??

Oh I was just curious. Have seen that airbox and I think it was Volant or something like that, maybe they did copy them. You never know....

Had a Volant intake on my '01, when I ordered the cleaner/oil recharge kit the box said Volant, the bottles inside said S&B. Somebody's doing something for one another.

Rick---Thanks for the info on SB Filters--I've been looking for a filter for my 97 6.5 suburban to improve breathing AND keep the dirt out!!!! K&N is such JUNK--most everything I"ve tried was crap, although Amsoil's foam filters have worked the best so far-air in dirt out!!

Thanks again Greg Carter Vermont

One small problem, when following their little search thing there, they don't even list the 6.6L TD in their drop down menu. Intakes for us don't exsist I guess.

Intake Kit Part # 75-3034

Replacement Filter 66-2129D

Site needs updated. I did a search and they are listed on the net for under $200 for the complete kit. I will try to post a picture next week. My son put it on his truck for a trip to Elkhart.

My son is pulling the 48 foot wedge today with this air cleaner. He is getting his best fuel mileage ever for the wedge. Could be a fluke, but I don't think so. We are going to remove the S&B and put the modified stock box back on to see. We did modify the S&B box by cutting a hole in the bottom for more air flow.

So how did the modified S&B box affect power, fuel mileage etc? Inquiring minds want to know!

RickDLance
04-18-2005, 09:05 PM
MPG is up! No real differance on noise. Power?? maybe a little. EGT's dropped about 15 degrees empty and about 35 loaded. Still testing.

Reference the S&B filter and box kit, I have a 2005 D/A LLy, I live in Victorville Ca., about 30 minuets away from the company (S&B), I called them and of course the lady I talked to could not find the part# 75-5006, after asking 2 other employees, they do have it in stock, Here's the SHOCKER... I cannot order it from them, I have to order it from a distributor back east somewhere, 3000 miles away and in turn, the distributor will place the order and it will be mailed out from S&B to my home.. It doesn't make sense!!!! Where did you order yours from? and how much was the whole kit? S&B wouldn't give out priceing, I also asked them to update their computer for the listed part number... we'll see.

Just got off the phone with S&B air filter corporation, after about 10 minuets and 3 employees later, they realized they do have the air intake kit for the LLY in stock, Part# 75-5006. The corporation is in California, about 30 min. from my home (Victorville, Ca.). I asked how much the complete kit was, they wouldn't give me price, they also told me I couldn't order it from them, I had to order it through 1 of their distributors back EAST, no local distributors. The distributor back EAST would place the order with them and they (S&B) would ship it out... GOTTA LOVE IT!!!. So I would order it from a distributor 3000 miles away and the company 30 miles away will ship it to me.WHATEVER!! RickDLANCE, where did you order your kit from and how much was it?

RickDLance

thewad1, I e-mailed a copy of your post to the owner of S&B. The LLY is a brand new part# & I understand them not selling direct, but can't believe there isn't some place closer to buy from. Do a Google search on S&B and see if that helps. I saw them for under $200 on one site. I got my kit to test. I do not sale them.

I am still waiting on my 2nd one. My son has the 1st one and won't give it back.

 What's the difference between S&B and the Others......

Cost? Performance? Quality? Don't want to sound ignorant, but just wondering.

Thanks for all testing!!!! :exactly:

S&B diesel filters are 8 layer cotton gauze filters. This gives you the airflow of a high performance filter and the filtration that the ISO 5011 standard dictates.

......The best thing is it is certified ISO 5011

Rick,

Do you happen to know what the IS 5011 test results were for the Duramax filter? I looked on their web site but could only find a description of the test, not any results.

It would be interesting to compare the S & B numbers to the ISO 5011 test results from the air filter testing Spicer headed up last summer.

(As an unrelated item, it would be great if you could post a new note in the general truck section sometime describing your initial impressions of the "virgin" 05 you just purchased. I am curious as to how it compares to the two 2004.5 trucks - fuel mileage, power, cooling, etc. Thanks. )
