: Biodiesel headed down in price.......
mannytranny 04-12-2005, 06:56 PM I bought a drum of the b100 at the beginning of Jan, and I am buying more now. The price has fallen about .25/g. Not directly due to the tax rebates either.

I ran to the end of my drum this week, and found that the last .5g was pretty ugly. I jostled the drum to move it so that I could get most of the BD out, and it was pretty milky on the bottom. Chunks and all. I had just taken out 4g before moving the tank, and that was all pretty good looking stuff. Clear and no chunks. Looks like the bad stuff falls out. Good for me.
I just hope the fuel is good quality.
Stepping up the blends. Headed to B50.
RonJT 04-12-2005, 07:16 PM Manny,
When I opened the first drum I immediately transfered it all out to 7 gallon water containers and closed those up. I saw no bad stuff...maybe a small amount of what appeared to be dark particles due to the drum.
Everything was clear...
Now I burned through B100 55 gallons in two weeks..so no time to settle.
I just opened up my second drum and drained it...into the containers...all clear.
Could be over time...air/moisture...bad for Bio.
I need to buy more.
Deadeye 04-12-2005, 07:22 PM I just bought 10 gal of BD from Bartkus Oil in Boulder. $2.89 a lot cheaper than last year due to Bush tax cut of $.50 (last Oct?). It took Blue Sun a while to get their new soybean stuff certified (or something, such) in order to get the tax cut to the dealer. Blue Sun has a processing plant comin on line in Alamosa at the end of May. Will be switchin to Mustard seed in the fall.
mannytranny 04-12-2005, 07:58 PM Ya, I think that anything bad in the drum would be the fault of my way of storing it. It was outside, on its side, in partial sunlight and a lot of rain from jan to now.
It didnt seem to affect anything before the last bit.
The tax cut has turned out to be a pretty complicated deal. No one really knows for sure how much they are supposed to be getting off. I just take the guys word for it.
Ron, how much was your B100 per gallon?
Can you say that you notice a real difference in how she runs from B50 to B100?
RonJT 04-12-2005, 08:16 PM I am not sure how the tax thing is working either. IF you figure I will get back the money...it was 2.71 per gallon...If the govt screws me...add .50cents per gallon.
I was told I got get it back in my taxes next year. Some freakin IRS form..great.
I want to make sure the next purchase has it in the price already.
I think they have to blend the damn thing to B98 or some BS percentage...what crap.
I do not know what the truck ran at B50. I went right to B100...no stopping in the middle.
To be honest...the difference at B100 took a bit to notice..probably because my blend was going up...as I burned fuel I added to tank that was orginally B20.
Now I can say for sure of a few things..it is quieter...and smoother..you can hear the turbo...you can hear the damn lift pump...and 80-90mph it is the smoothest ride I have had..relative DIC mpg is up at those speeds.
My balance rates...not sure...but the B100 seems to have affected my two problem injectors...the average numbers are down/better. Use to avg +4 to +5 and sometimes higher. Now the numbers seem to avg at 4 or below.
I seem to burn the same amount of fuel when Granny driving Cruise control 60-65mph on 405.
There is an odor that is different..not offensive but not like cooking oil or anything...hard to explain...it is not very noticeable.
Smoke...well not much to speak of....I can get some but at night I think it is just the other cars headlights..it seems like a lighter smoke.
That is it for now.

Nice work Manny! Keep the good news about biodiesel coming...:hail: :bounce: :thankyou2
Mackin 04-13-2005, 05:33 AM Is there a shelf life for Bio? I mean french fries and Chinese food when left out on the counter, you get the idea.....
mannytranny 04-13-2005, 10:18 AM 6 months.
Pry even longer if an additive is added and/or it is stores inside........
skoryaro2 04-13-2005, 10:32 AM What does the liquid form of Biodiesel smell like? Does it smell like fuel, soybeans, corn? I must admit that I've never heard of it until I started hanging around here!
Deadeye 04-13-2005, 10:58 AM smells a little like veg oil (usually made of soybeans) but not very strong or noticable unless you get your nose close to it.
King Nuzz 04-13-2005, 12:44 PM Manny,
Interesting about the settled milky stuff at the bottom of your drum. What was the temperature range where you are during the last 3 months? I think that some of the fuel molecules with higher cloud / gel points get together and settle to the bottom. I use 5 gal. containers and am careful about not pouring from the bottom inch of the jug, where it is often cloudy or milky, except in the hottest months of the summer. I pour off the dregs into another jug, which I let settle and pour from in warm weather. My fuel is not ASTM, so I take extra time and care to settle it.
BTW, how is your tractor running on bio? What blend are you using? Any differences in power?
Turbotug 04-13-2005, 04:16 PM Check this out:ro) Cheaper than straight #2:eek:

marcdeluca 04-13-2005, 06:53 PM I bought my first drum of B100 yesterday for $2.83. Found a different place today that has it for $2.74, will get another drum when I go near that city.

MAD MAC.........errr MAD MAXXX ????????
):h
mannytranny 04-13-2005, 11:07 PM Im not worried about the white at the bottom. I put some B100 in the fridge overnight at the beginning of the drum, and at the end of the drum. Very little difference in cloudiness. Apparently thats a good test of moisture content.......
I gave the last 4g to a buddy with a PSD..........
Even the stuff that I drained out last has settled fine. The drum does a good job of this. Moral: dont shake the drum before taking out the BD.
Mac, from most things Ive heard, B100 has a better storage life than regular diesel.
Getting more drums on Fri.
mannytranny 04-13-2005, 11:09 PM Manny,

Temp was from 30 to 90. Stored outside, sun in the late afternoon. I tried to open the drum only during warm dry days, but I cheated here and there. Wont be the case from now on.
As I said, the last 4g of the drum looked just fine. No crud in the bottom at all.
Bronco 04-13-2005, 11:25 PM Could you use a small pump with a water separator/filter to transfer the fuel?
mannytranny 04-14-2005, 12:12 AM Ide rather not. I just thin the water settled out to the very bottom, like a washing.
I have checked the fuel filters on the truck nothing in there.
If water was able to form in my barrel, I bet a lot more was able to form in the trucks tank.
RonJT 04-14-2005, 01:09 AM Manny,
Did Jim say the price has got the tax credit in????
BTW: What would that price be??
I would like to get another 2-3 drums.
mannytranny 04-14-2005, 06:30 PM PMd ya.
RonJT 04-20-2005, 04:17 PM I just talked to Ted Brown of TW Brown Oil company...he states that Biodiesel is going up in price...as least his purchased price.
He claims virgin soy from the midwest is running around 2.7 a gallon....and that the TAX CREDIT only applied to Blenders...such as himself. It does not apply to individuals and to get the credit you have to be registered as a blender with the IRS.
Because the Credit did not apply to Processing Plants....this pissed them off...so they raised prices to around half of the $1/gallon credit...in an attempt to get some of the money.
On a local level..Ted feels we should stay away from the recycled stuff in that it is not good quality and feels that even if it was processed perfect it still would cloud at 47 degrees...higher if not higher. Virgin clouds at 30 degrees. I mentioned about some stuff forming at bottom of containers and he was not surprised implying that IWP is not the best of processors for the recycled material.
Anyway the pump(s) in Ventura are now open...price is too high at 3.79 for B100 but that should drop once he factors in the credit in about 2 weeks. At that point it has to be a blend...at B99 according to the law.
mannytranny 04-20-2005, 05:36 PM Interesting, I put the imperial Biotane in the fridge overnight, and it came out just as clear as it went in.........No problems there.
Still waiting to hear from Jim about my next few barrels.
RonJT 04-20-2005, 07:02 PM I know...it will all depend on the stock that they start with on the recycled stuff...according to Ted. I guess the macdonalds stuff is really bad....other types are better.
He did not want to comment on the stuff we are seeing at the bottom of the drum/containers from IWP...he just said it did not surprise him.
BTW: Ted said Some virgin stuff or even some regular D2 should dislodge it but may clog some filters...I think in our case we do not have a lot of it if any.
mannytranny 04-20-2005, 07:25 PM Ron, did you get the idea that TW might be able to deliver any BD? Can you give me his #?
Tx
Dmax Tim 04-28-2005, 01:30 PM I bought my first drum of B100 yesterday for $2.83. Found a different place today that has it for $2.74, will get another drum when I go near that city.
OK what city?
RonJT 04-28-2005, 01:53 PM Ted's number is in the link.

mannytranny 04-28-2005, 07:15 PM I just got it all figured out.......
They are blending it to B99, and they took .50 cents of the rebate for the added pwork. Fine with me for sure. It came out to 2.53 or so per gallon.
I think that now since theyve got it figured out, the next orders will be much cheaper...........Maybe not....
Either way, Ill be glad to be back burning the bean.
RonJT 04-28-2005, 07:43 PM Is this from Jim? I just talked to him and what they do is add a 0.5 gallon of regular diesel to the B100 drums and call it good...now they comply with the law.
The 6 drums they have they just got and I think he said it is made from local stock...not the WVO...so not sure if it is soy or some other crop.
Hope to get my drums next week.
Now I want to know what the final price from Brown oil at the pump is after the credit is factored in...for B99.
mannytranny 04-28-2005, 09:43 PM Yup, from Jim.
It is virgin.
You can thank me, BTW, for the "discovery" of this tax break application........http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
