Hello everyone.
Please don't hate me, but I currently drive a Dodge Ram 1500 with the HEMI. However I'm looking to get rid of it and maybe get a diesel. Even if I don't get a diesel, it will at least be a Chevrolet or GMC.
So my question to everyone is, which model of the Duramax should I shop around for? Anything I need to look out for?
Thanks in advance!!

Welcome to DP. Are you planning to leave it stock or doing alil modding?

Welcome! I would look for a 2005 or 2006 Durmax. They seem to have the best fuel mileage stock and great potential for increased fuel mileage with the mods. Also no DPF!

I'd do a little modding to it. Exhaust, intake, programmer, etc... Not all at once.

The new body styles look better IMO (Chevy's) on the 2007.5 and newer, however the motor doesn't have all the exhaust garbage prior to 2007.5. GMC, get one that is prior to 2007.5 for exhaust reasons.
Short story long...get either Chevy or GMC prior to 2007.5.

Is there a difference between the GMC and Chevy exhaust on 2007.5 and older?

The 2007.5 and newer have a lot more emission crap. DPF filter and a regen cycle that burns off the particulate trapped in the filter. Milage with the new style (LMM) has been known to be worse than the old (LBZ). I agree with Sacket on the second part of his post, get a 2006-2007 LBZ. I still think the old style Chevy looks better too.

Is there a difference between the GMC and Chevy exhaust on 2007.5 and older? Like said above if you can get one without the DPF its a better choice. It also gets better mileage to start with so say a lot of 2007.5 ^ owners.

Ok. I thought you were saying there was a difference between the GMC and Chevrolet for the same model year. Meaning an 06 GMC had a different exhaust than an 06 Chevy.

You looking for a new truck or used truck? You want towing power and a great riding truck? If you have the coin I would look at the 08-09 F-250 (great truck all around) or a Dodge (not really a great truck inside but hell of a motor)...
Here most will tell you that you need to get a GMC or Chevy.. GM makes a good truck as well but do your homework..

Looking for new or used. I'm a GM employee, so I get a pretty good discount, and I can also by trucks that were driven by GM executives for an even better discount. But I don't like all the emissions on the new diesels.
Used would be good, but they usually have high miles, and I can almost buy a new one for the price of a used one. And I'm always concerned on whether or not I'm buying someone else's problem...
