will a 700 r4 from a 1990 chev 4x4 truck be a direct swap to my 84 6.2? short of a torque converter and regulator? I found a rebuilt one fairly close to home for sale. I was gonna have my tranny rebuilt, but had to drive 3 hours to a tranny shop I trust.

It will fit right in there. not sure if the internal wiring is the same but should work, some of them have different wiring at the 4 pin connector for different things, 90 obviously has come computer input. I think there is way around that if it doesnt work quite right.

Rib Tickller,
I would help a lot if you would give some information as to what vehicle you have. IS it 4x4, half ton, etc.? Go to User CP at the top of the page, signature in the pull down and fill it out.

The 1990 models use a basic 4L60 (700R4) transmission. The 4x4 case is heavier and has a cast aluminum flywheel cover. It usually has a "K" on the bellhousing. It has all of the GM updates and is stronger than the '84 transmission. TRANSGO does make a shift kit for it and I usually recommend installing it on 4L60's. If it is from a gasser, you will need a diesel torque converter and a diesel governor. You could use the governor from your old transmission if it is serviceable.

If you can give us the the model number stamped on the lower right rear side of the tranny, we may be able to look up the schematic and tell you what you need to do to change the wiring. The wiring controls the torque converter lock-up.

1990 models have the electronic VSS(vehicle speed sensor). Your 84 is cable dirven. If you have 4X4 the sensor/cable gear is in the transfer case and may not be an issue.

The rear tail housing on 2x4 4L60 transmissions will accept either the speed sensor or the mechanical speedometer drive. If you have a 4x4, your '84 208 transfer case with the mechanical speedo drive will bolt up the the 4L60. The 1990 4L60 4x4 comes with the NP 241 transfer case which is stronger than the early model (it has a 5 gear planetary) and has the speed sensor. I don't have any information on converting it to a mechanical speedo drive.
