: cracked head gasket
mrbeezie 02-26-2009, 05:55 PM Can any one tell me an average price on this. I have an.03 with 200k on it.
I just got the injectors replaced 8 months ago and not
w this headache. Iguess ill end up having to pay this time.I had a mechanic look at it
And he's pretty sure this is what it is it has white smoke and
Its loosing coolant and when he took the oil fill cap
Off it had a little water on it.
Horsehaulin 02-26-2009, 09:23 PM Just got injectors fixed, and you are losing coolant?
Sure you dont have a bad injector cup? I would take it back to the dealer that replaced the injectors and have them see if a seal might have rolled and is leaking coolant into the engine from there. That would be were I would look first. Just sounds too fishy to me that you had the injectors replaced 8 months ago and now the HG's are bad.
If it isnt the seals, I would be suspect of the cup like I asked before.
shawn macananny 02-27-2009, 08:07 AM You have an 03 and from what i read its far less common on those. Average cost $4500 from the dealer provided the heads arent warped. I drove my truck 20,000 miles with a presurized coolant tank (blown head gasket) and had two blown head gaskets when i opened the engine up and neither head was warped.
If you do it yourself it will take around 40 hours. It took me about 42 but i had a few bolts break, alot of rust, stripped out 6 of the 48 socket cap screws holding on the valve covers. I took my time and cleaned everything really good. I spent about $1400 with a $250 water pump and various tools.
What are you symptoms?
Is your coolant tank holding pressure over night?
Do you still have heat?
You are just seeing smoke at idle? This could easily be an injector cup seal. The cup could have been lifted just enough to break the loctite seal it has in the head when an injector was removed. I have a thread on here about swapping my head gaskets with lots of pictures to help you understand the parts of the duramax. My truck with two blown headgaskets never smoked at idle.

mrbeezie 02-27-2009, 03:07 PM The truck smokes after I've been driving for a while and maybe go in a store and come back out and crank it up then a ton of smoke comes out but it goes away after I pull off. The heat doesn't work unless I get on the highway and sometimes it still don't work. The smoke is a sweet smell. Anyone with any other suggestions.

Yeah sounds like a head gasket.
juliocsr25 02-27-2009, 05:30 PM ?
shawn macananny 02-27-2009, 05:33 PM Well actually thinking about it could be the injector sleeve too because that would cause compression to leak into the cooling system too... duh.
mrbeezie 02-27-2009, 09:27 PM How hard of a job is the injector sleeve. But I wonder if I could find someone that would tell the truth about exactly what it is. Just replaced the injectors 8k miles ago now this and the dealer that replaced them was owned bill heard chevrolet so I can't take it there.
shawn macananny 02-27-2009, 09:30 PM I dont think there is any definative way of telling without taking it apart. You could dissassemble down to the injector sleeves and see if any were loose and if not you could pull the heads and replace the headgaskets but either are ALOT of work.
mrbeezie 02-27-2009, 10:27 PM Dealer said its showing code p0620 and it needs a generator and the cooling system is under high pressure and it will need a radiator. Is it possible I need all this. This dealer told me they wouldn't fix it they want to give me a whole new engine and gave me a quote of 15000
Cougar GT-E 02-27-2009, 11:46 PM I would bust my boot off in the service writers ass if he told me that pack of total utter BS. But, get that in WRITING.
Run to a different repair shop. If it is the injector sleeves, go after them for the cost to repair.
mrbeezie 02-27-2009, 11:56 PM Ya they gave it to me In writing. I raised hell and asked for the manager and all he would say is this is what u need. What a headache. Gotta find somewhere else to take it.
madmatt 02-28-2009, 12:07 AM Pull all your glow plugs and pressurize the system and keep it pressurized. let it sit for a while, crank it and see if any coolant comes out any of the holes. If so you can peak in the cylinder w/ a borescope and pin point the leak. If no borescope, pull that injector, pressurize the system and see if the cup is leaking.
shawn macananny 02-28-2009, 08:16 AM Sounds about right for a new engine. A enw radiator is not going to fix your pressurized cooling problem.
mrbeezie 03-02-2009, 02:47 PM What is the generator and what does it do. Not real knowledgable with these trucks and I appreciate u guys help
shawn macananny 03-02-2009, 05:06 PM The generator would be the alternater i would think. It charges your batteries
