Anyone use Donaldson to replace the CAT filter on thier pre-OEM filter setup, such as Nicktane? Donaldson lists a 2-micron replacement for the 1R-0749 CAT filter and there is a sale next week at NAPA. These filters any good?

Ya Donaldson is a real good filter. I tried to cross ref the 1R-0749 to it in the past but couldn't find one. Do you have the Donaldson number?

BTW, I run ALL Donaldson and some 3116 engines are at 20k hours on the original injectors. Come to think of it, I've never done injectors on an all Donaldson filter regimen.

I thought I previously read that the P551311 was a primary filter and not 2 micron. This is what I meant about not being able to find an exact Donaldson replacement. That was long ago so maybe they are different now. Does anyone have the filtration specs on the P551311? The Donaldson site leaves a lot to be desired..

You have to call Doanaldson for that and its a PIA to get to the right person. I did it once and it took about 20 minutes.

Spoke to Donaldson today and they said it was a 2 micron filter (2 micron absolute). I thought CAT filters were made by Donaldson ?????

Sorry for the question but is the Wix/napa part the same as the donaldson part that is a CAT 1R0749 replacement?

The CAT 1R0749 ,the Wix 33674 ,the Napa 3674 and the Donaldson P551311 are the same damn filter....sure the Cat has the cool yellow paint job but they are all 2 micron.... no one will tell you if they make the Cat filter or not.... sure the Cat dealer will tell you Donaldson makes there filters....I have been know to say it as well..... but honestly Cat filters are made by several different places...... call around in your area and see what is available and what is less $.... I go to the Cat dealer once or more a week.... Napa is on my way home and the Cat dealer is a Donaldson dealer..... buy any of them and be happy..... any difference is not going to be enough to tell.

Have you ever examined the Cat filter and the Donaldson side by side? Have you ever cut one open? I don't think so. They achieve the exact same goal, which is protect the fuel system from contamination. Is one better than the other? Not in my book, but they are markedly different, and I ain't talking about the paint.

Do you have a point ? They have there differences yes but they all do the same job any thing one has over the other is not worth much if any effort to find / locate .... IE if the Cat dealer sells the 1R0749 for $2 less and is an hr ride from you and you pass up 4 NAPA stores on the way there you are gaining nothing but "the cool factor" of having a Cat fuel filter...... that now cost you more than any of the others listed.... call around in your area find what is available and don't be afraid to ask about price.... if you walked into my local NAPA and asked for the 3674 it would be $21 ish.... I can get them for $18 well $9 this week the Cat 1R0749 is $17 most Cat dealers have little if any mark up on PM parts..... the Donaldson I can get for $16.75..... get one and be happy or better yet leave it stock and tell your wife and friends how dumb we are for modifying our trucks because GM has the world by the ass and they need no improvement

Or save your fuel and refuse to drive anywhere. Just support a vendor here that supports you. :thumb:

Do you have a point ? I just was looking to RE-clarify your "they are the same damn filter" statement. Running a fleet of 2 micron filter equipped machines, I have some other opinions on these filters, but they are opinions based on my experience of servicing over 300 fuel filters a year.

Well lets hear them..... if you are having problems from any of them it is not the filters fault...... bad fuel etc would be more so to blame than the filter

The only bad filters here, ever, were 6 P554004 oil filters that leaked at the factory crimp.

The CAT filters are different from the others, as they use the Aluminum base plate and a nylon center tube, use acrylic beads and spiral roving to prevent the filter pleats from bunching together providing for more even uniform filtering, and molded end caps to prevent leaks. The filter media is also some of the best on the market today. You do not find these qualities on the filters mentioned from Napa/Wix, or the others. I am not trying to bash the other filters, but I believe the CAT filters are worth the little extra money that you pay for them. Just my humble opinion.

RI chevy Silveradoman...I tend to agree...my only comparison was a CAT to the equivalent Fleetguard. I have cut them up and they are not the same inside but rather the differences you noted for the CAT. Also a long time ago.....the original folks on the dieselplace actually did a test and the CAT outperformed all others by a long shot...the cloeset one was the fleetguard. I do believe that Donaldson was not part of the original test I mentioned.
