Since I cannot find it in the DIY sections I will ask.
How hard is it to regear a truck like mine? Are there any special tools needed? Shims? ETC.....
If someone has a DIY about this please post it and send me the link.

I am reviving my old thread on regearing due to a recent issue I am having.
My truck has about 75K on it now and on a recent trip towing my trailer back home from the dunes in Oregon going through portland my truck all of a sudden started making this scraping noise related to how much gas i gave it and kind of sounded like a rubber squeck to go with it once and a while. I pulled over thinking it was my carrier bearing. Now after driving around back and forth to work I hear a metalic click. I pulled my rear dif dip stick and it had some filings on it, the plug looked like a chia pet. No big chinck just little fillings. It has Royal purple in it since day one. Is my rear end going bad on me allready or is it somthing else?? My U joints apear to be fine they look and feel nice and tight. I can make it make the noise if I am on the lip of my garage and put it in d then reverse it will make the noise somtimes. Is it my transfercase, the reason I ask is if I put it up on jack stands in park and I rotate the back tires by hand back and forth the transfer case makes a clunk/click noise. It does not have the pump rub problem and has fluid never ran out? Tell mee where to look.
Also would this be coverd under the Five year 100K powertrain warrenty thing that came with my truck when it was new?

FWIW, I would think that metal shavings on the magnet in your diff would be a sign that something inside your diff is starting to dissintegrate. As far as the TC goes, that's anybodies guess, but I have read that the rear mainshaft bearing is sometimes prone to failure. Whether that will cause a clunk, I don't know, but it might be something to look into. Also you might want to call a reputable shop that works on TC's like Merchant Auto, Riverside Gear, Kennedy and describe your problem to them. They may have a few suggestions of what it might be. Sorry, I couldn't be of more help.

After jacking up my rear end and inspecting the U-joints then my last one that conects to the Rear diff was bad. I took it off and replaced it. Turns out that it got a crack in it and all the needle bearings fell out. Glad it was just a $20 part.
