I'll be putting in my 3rd DMF soon and only at 51K, but still can't complain I love my ZF-6! It really depends on how much you like to shift, drive them both and then decide!

Nagging problems of the ally are NSBU switches. They are covered for 100k are easy to fix and when replaced with the updated switch dont like to grenade like the old black one. New one is tan. Some minor things with the first gen but thats been resolved.
Go with what ever you prefer though. Even if the DM takes a crap you can get it beefed up fairly easy. The alli can be built to handle tons of power and is quicker in the 1/4 though.
What exactly do you want to do with your truck exactly?
Also sticks are like reg cabs. The general figures if you have a stick or a reg cab you couldnt possibly want all of the nifty creature comforts. You can get most stuff but some options are allison only or were at one time. Dosnt make sense and I duno if that matters to you?

well i need the standard stuf electric windows and a/c and a nice stereo but no need for the leather, the elec seats are nice though it needs to be an xtra cab shortbed because thats what the wife wants but i can get what i like she wont be happy my choices are(std cab stdbed 6spd air 4x4 and thats it with a custom muffler delete)
her choices (xtracab shortbed ally all the creature comforts and 4x4 sound doesnt matter long as its really fast and smokes all the ricers!) so you see were diffrent i guess i could live with the ally but i cant live with the price of hers. a used truck may be an option.

If you're going to leave it stock, the ally will do fine for handling the power, and the DMF MAY still go on you, it did for me. If you're adding power, you will need to sink money into the ally to handle it, and for the ZF you'll need to spend money on the flywheel/clutch. From what we've seen, the ZF is very strong, but it's the flywheel/clutch that are the weak points. Other than that, I'm with the rest of the guys here; drive both and see what you like. Just remember what I said about adding power...... Best of luck!!

I had an 01 ally and traded it in for a crew cab w/ a ZF-6 and I love it to death, olny thing is I feel that it is a little low geared and you have to shift fairly quickly. The D-Max has plenty of power and torqe even stock the skiping shifts is no problem for it. It really depends on what you prefer, try em both see which is best, I'd let the litte woman try it out too, that may be the deciding factor.):h

My 02 is pretty much fully loaded, the only thing I don't have is onstar, leather, and carpeted floors, but has everything else offered in 2002. I had to replace the flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate. Now that I have the new clutch and assembly things are good, but the "updated" flywheel still makes noise when you get on it. Other than that I love the truck, and the ZF does seem to be an awesome tranny. Honestly though, I wouldn't have minded this truck to be equiped with an allison. Good luck in your search!
