: Difference between Chevy and GMC
Wheatfield83 04-11-2005, 09:37 PM Is there any difference between the two other then cosmetics? A buddy of me is trying to tell me that the frames on the GMCs are heavier. I told him a couple of times that was bullcrap, but I'd like to back it up.
Later,
Wheatfield.

arguy 04-11-2005, 10:10 PM I think they come off the same line. The Chevy wears a bow tie! :blahblah: different cosmetically. You could always tell the guy that there is a Chevy running around out there with a GMC interior!  ;)

The 1500 Silverado's have small frames - I had mine bend down 2' when someone hit me! I now have the 1 ton and the Dodge's look like toys! ):h

The only reason we ALLOW you Chevy guys to pass us once in a while is because we GMC guys are not afraid or embarrassed to slow down and let people take a good look at our truck once in a while
:joke: :)

skoryaro2 04-12-2005, 09:45 AM Cosmetic and about 1000 bucks.
When I odered my truck - I compared "standard SLE" options between the Chevy's and GMC's. I don't recall exactly what option it was but IIRC GMC included about a $500 option as "standard" that Chevy had listed as an "option". The unaccounted for difference in price overall for the same truck was about $400 higher for a GMC. That made it worth paying for for cosmetic reasons IMO. Quite honestly, I would have bought a Chevy if they still had the older body style and saved $400.

That's why I bought a Chevy http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/lol.gif
Also Chevy's have muffler bearings and GMC's don't.
skoryaro2 04-12-2005, 10:14 AM That's why I bought a Chevy ....... Chevy's have muffler bearings and GMC's don't.
All the more reason to go GMC. Chevy will nickle & dime you to death with things like that. Have you ever had to replace them? Those buggers don't come cheap! :muahaha:
bluenote 04-12-2005, 10:23 AM To be serious, if you have a crew cab 2500HD or 3500, they run down the exact same assembly line at the Flint, MI truck plant (I believe the standard and extended cab trucks all go through the Pontiac, MI truck plant). There are only cosmetic differences and some differences in pricing among the standard features and option packages. If you were to equip them both with the exact same options, the price would be very close. The drivetrain, frame, axles, brakes, etc... are all exactly the same between the two lines.
To respond to the posts about the GMC's being nicer looking....
I'd have to agree with you regarding the 2003 models and later. However, I prefer the domed hood on the Chevy's in the 2001 and 2002 model years.

I came out with about the same figure you did when I bought my 03. I worked the GMC/CHERV pick up line in 45-46(Pontiac, Mich) when they made the conversion from WWII pickups, 6x6 trucks and Ducks back to commercial vehicilles. My dad was a foreman at the time and later worked up to Superintendent before he retired. Over the years there has been much talk about discontinuing GMC,s but the opinion was that most GMC buyers would switch to Ford because they thought Chev was as cheap (quality) truck. Back then, there weren't very many pick ups, mostly farms and a few few bussiness,es. GM would like to add the Chev and GMC pproduction figures together to show they make mor trucks than Ford.
WilliamBos 04-12-2005, 09:03 PM Hi,
It all boils down to Louis Chevrolet vs Max Grabowski ( Grabowski Motor Company.. ) Ill take GMC..................... Fine American engineering vs American-euro engineering!!
Take care
Will
dojohnso 04-13-2005, 12:58 AM I bought the GMC based on looks. I like the way the GMC looks vs the Chevy. Front end of the GMC doesnt look like it got a wedgie. Also cannot stand the cat eyed looking headlights. I had a 2002 Avalanche before.
Other than that, if the Chevy looked the same, I prob would have paid about $500 less and got a Chevy.
Between the 2, you cant go wrong. Other than hood and grille and the minimal upcharge for the GMC, bolt for bolt, the trucks are the same. My sales guy tried telling me the GMCs had a more reinforced front hood, and that justified the extra $. I don't believe that. I just like the looks of the GMC front end better.

Damn! Credit card numbers are worn off and I can't order any http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif
On a serious note I was originally looking at the GMC but I couldn't find a GMC dealer that was willing to get what I wanted. After the third strike out I walked next door to a Chevy dealer and they did the leg work and found my truck. I like the GMC look but that only goes so far. Plus by going Chevy I got the bonus muffler bearings.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
On a related note.... What makes the GMC "Professional Grade"? as opposed to the Chevy. BTW I am a GMC guy, my truck is better because it has an S in front of the LT :)
MXdiesel 04-14-2005, 12:29 AM Like many people, i really dont care for the front of the 03+ chevys, although i do love the previous style. That is why i got the GMC. Chevy should have kept the old front end IMO. It doesnt seem to be to popular with the masses.
aka108 04-14-2005, 08:52 AM Really didn't care which one I purchased. Main reason for Chev was because where I live half the year the Chev dealer is good for service, the GMC dealer does not have a good reputation service wise. Sheet metal wise I could care less. Both nice.
ockgator 04-14-2005, 09:52 PM Chevy's are really GMC's with X88 option, look in your glovebox on the option label chevy guys.. it's there
X88 chevrolet conversion
That is because all trucks are (or were, not sure if GM has changed the way they name divisions now)) built by GMTB... GM truck and bus
vettelovralexand 04-14-2005, 10:59 PM Just read this thread and learned something amongst the madness. I knew that GMC always stood for something other than General Motor Company as most people think, but have been searching for a few years trying to find out the name that the G stood for. Thanks for the intel.
84jeepjohn 04-15-2005, 08:15 PM The GMC's are meaner. :Dto your wallet ):h
personally I really like the 05 hood. I can not stand the GMC 's nose
It's all just personal taste!!
bob camire 04-15-2005, 09:35 PM At least my chrome hasnt rusted like on my brothers newgmc...he also complains of tranny slop, exhaust rattle, chrome plastic grille had to be replaced, i guess i will stop there on professional grade ! cuz my other 2 trucks are gmc's..he he he
farfromhome63 04-16-2005, 01:58 AM hey could you put a chevy bowtie on the gmc that would be a gmc in disguise and everyone would think your professional grade when your really like a rock can you smell the tires cookin!!!!!!!!!!!
Thankful 04-16-2005, 06:24 AM LT stands for Luxury Touring. SLT is Semi-luxury touring.
On a related note.... What makes the GMC "Professional Grade"? as opposed to the Chevy. BTW I am a GMC guy, my truck is better because it has an S in front of the LT :)
GMC-2002-Dmax 04-16-2005, 08:28 AM GMC's are better.............why..........because I said so..........:stick_out :stick_out :stick_out
Seriously, I have always owned GMC Trucks.........the dealer I bought from is a small, old school dealer that delivers great service and treats me excellent.
I would have bought a Chevy if I had too..........but really wanted a GMC.
Besides.............GMC's are built better..........:muahaha:
03duraHDmax 04-16-2005, 09:48 AM When I was looking for my truck, used, I wouldn't even look at Chevrolet. I'm a former GMC/Pontiac Tech and just like GMC's look better. I've always regarded GMC as the more refined (like the Trans Am vs. Camaro). Then for the hell of it I included Chevrolet in my autotrader search and there it was.. My truck at a really good price. So I wanted a blue GMC and I got a black Chevrolet. Now that I have it that slanty eyed front end look is really starting to grow on me. If I had to do it all over again I'd get the Chevrolet still. In 2003 GM screwed up both Chevy and GMC hoods.. But now, in 2005, the new Chevy hood is beautiful http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/drool.gif
Best pic I could find.. But compared to a 2005 GMC...

Turfmower 04-16-2005, 11:59 AM Who would you rather have work on your truck. The guy that works on Cavaliars and only sees one diesel truck a year or the Guy that work on Top Kicks?
McRat 04-16-2005, 12:06 PM As I found out, for some Cold Air Inductions (intakes) the difference in the hood shape requires a different P/N between GMC and Chevy.
ffrrules 04-16-2005, 12:14 PM I bought a chevy because the local chevy dealer told me he would routinely change the air in my tires for free, but the GMC dealer said he wouldn't.
):h
03duraHDmax 04-16-2005, 02:34 PM Who would you rather have work on your truck. The guy that works on Cavaliars and only sees one diesel truck a year or the Guy that work on Top Kicks?
Sierra = Silverado
Top Kick = Kodiac
Cavalier = Sunfire (Most all GMC dealers are Pontiac/GMC)
It's all the same..

What is Sunfire? The dealer I use is GMC only. They sell the W trucks too. They sell lots of Diesels. The Chevy dealer by me didn't have one Chassis. They didnt even want to order me a truck. I rather buy form place that sell lots of truck not few a month.

That's funny because the GMC dealer by me had ONE diesel on the lot, and the chevy dealer had a whole bunch of 3/4 and 1 tons.
Again like stated before it's personal preference. Personly the slant eye thing is not too bad now. I HATED it at first, but with the 05 I think it's good (for the Chevys)
millerliteliker 04-18-2005, 02:36 PM The difference is simple - the Chevy's have a stupid "Avalanche" Halloween slant-eye front end while the GMC's have a much more truck-like "normal" front clip. Also, the GMC's don't have the bulging taillights like the Chevy's do.
Basically, Chevy decided to take a classic good looking truck ('98-'02 style) and butcher it. Thank goodness GM made the GMC available for normal men or I don't know what I would be driving.
Station10fd 04-18-2005, 03:38 PM The difference is simple - the Chevy's have a stupid "Avalanche" Halloween slant-eye front end Careful, your gonna hurt Mr. Spocks feelers! ):h
Mark_my_word 04-18-2005, 04:04 PM When I was looking for my truck I decided up front I was going to get the Chevy because I liked the look but decided to just go to a GMC dealer anyway just to see what they would say. I asked the salesman if there was a difference between the Chevy and GMC. He actually said yes there was a big difference and proceeded to list about 10 of them, all of which were cosmetic. When I challenged him and said those are all cosmetic and asked him again what real difference there was he said 'GMC trucks are better because they make less of them, this is because they take their time when building them'. I laughed at him and said 'no, they make less of them because people buy less of them'. Then I walked across the street to the Chevy dealer and bought my truck.
;) GMC is far superior: ask all owners, the fragerance the "inspection girls" leave on the seats last forever!
Burnin Mad Max 04-19-2005, 03:41 AM You don't think that having four times as many Chevy dealers makes a difference do you? Anybody who'd even argue about one being better really is a unique individual. The fact is they roll off the same assembly line. And about 4 get Chevy cosmetics to every one GMC or whatever the actual numbers are. I personally have owned two GMC's and two Chevy trucks. I'll buy whichever on e I get a better deal on. I have always prefered the GM vehicles and probably always will. I prefered the GMC's looks in 2003 to the Chevy's but still would have bought one for the right price. It's fun to rib but lets be realistic here. It really comes down to preference and quality does not come into the eqaution.
Dmax Tim 04-19-2005, 09:44 AM I was diving w/ a couple of Flint workers this past weekend.
They would only buy GMC, it had something to do w/ skilled workers put the GMC together and they have temps assemble the Chevy.
OK, JK
We ALL know the GMC is much better looking than the Chevy!
