My '84 6.2 with a 700-R4 is fine all the time (I think) except when I start it cold I put it in drive or reverse and it don't seem to "Bonk" into gear as it does warmed up. I have been putting it in and out of gear a few times while I wait for the diesel to warm a bit as I was taught is good for them. if I do this a half dozen times it seems to "hook up" better. I am pretty well versed in owning old "iron" but Auto trannies are not my forte' as I have always preferred to drive sticks. My wife's cars always have an auto but I limit my knowledge to a filter change upon purchase and it always seems to last 'til I sell it. I have never had a 700-R4 yet and wish to keep it top notch so the wife can drive it if needed. I thank you all so much in advance help in this matter. Brent

it could be a partialy pluged filter i would recomend a trans service it could also be that the seals in the trans are getting hard what happens is the seals start to go hard over time due to heat when the trans cools down the seals shrink when you start it the oil passes around the seals until it warmes up a bit and softens the rubber and the seal starts to seal again
