My parking brake on my 01 is getting weak I looked under the truck real quick and did not see any adjustment for the cable. Did I miss something? Is there a adjustment procedure somewhere here.

start backing up, and pump the parking brake usually works for me.

Do a search, there was a recent thread on it with lots of info.

I beleive that in the rear disks, you have to take the rear rotors off to make the adjustment. There is a mini drum inside that is the emergancy brake.

The adjustment at the cable is not what you are looking for. Trust me on that. I've been there <!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shapetype id="_x0000_t75" coordsize="21600,21600" o:spt="75" o:preferrelative="t" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" filled="f" stroked="f"> <v:stroke joinstyle="miter"/> <v:formulas> <v:f eqn="if lineDrawn pixelLineWidth 0"/> <v:f eqn="sum @0 1 0"/> <v:f eqn="sum 0 0 @1"/> <v:f eqn="prod @2 1 2"/> <v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"/> <v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"/> <v:f eqn="sum @0 0 1"/> <v:f eqn="prod @6 1 2"/> <v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"/> <v:f eqn="sum @8 21600 0"/> <v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"/> <v:f eqn="sum @10 21600 0"/> </v:formulas> <v:path o:extrusionok="f" gradientshapeok="t" o:connecttype="rect"/> <o:lock v:ext="edit" aspectratio="t"/> </v:shapetype><v:shape id="_x0000_i1025" type="#_x0000_t75" alt="" style='width:12pt; height:12pt'> <v:imagedata src="file:///C<img src="images/smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Big Grin" class="inlineimg" />OCUME~1hbLOCALS~1Tempmsohtml1\01clip_image001.gif" o:href="http://dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif"/> </v:shape><![endif]--><!--[if !vml]-->:(<!--[endif]-->

You may have enough adjustment with the star wheel inside the drum portion of the brake. It will not auto adjust by pumping your brakes while backing up. That only works for hydraulic drum brakes, not disk brakes actuated by a cable. This is a much simpler mechanism.

If the start-wheel adjustment does not give you enough holding power, you need to replace the parking brake shoe.

Unfortunately, to service the parking brake you must remove the differential cover and disconnect the drive axles. Slide the drive axles outward so the large flange allows access to the small parking brake shoe. The 3/4 & 1 ton trucks may have two shoes. 1/2 ton trucks have one continuous shoe that makes almost a complete circle. In all cases, the parking brake shoes are smaller than the flange to which the wheel bolts to. In all cases, the shoes are behind the flange. The shoes are inaccessible until you slide the drive axles out of the way.

<o:p></o:p>For trucks with drum brakes in the rear, just pull the drum and you have access. The drive axle trick applies to trucks with disk brakes.

Good luck and god bless.

I don't believe you need to remove the axles, try this link:

http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18556&highlight=emergency+brake+adjustment

Note: The 2500HD and 3500's have full floating axles, unbolt at the axle flange and slide the shaft out. No need to remove cover. The 2500 and below have semi floating axles, one needs to remove the cover on those.

Wheatfield83 You are right I backed up and continued to pump the parking brake pedal holding the release lever and got the adjustment back it holds real strong again

:offtopic: , you may want to start your own thread of you're looking for something other than parking brake adjustment which is what this thread's topic is. Just a friendly hint.

Just a little trivia, I was reading at the Allison website and they say there that the tranny parking pawl is designed to hold 26,000lbs GCWR. Now I know nobody likes that clunk whenever you go back into gear, but evidently, the thing's built for it. Guess I don't really need a parking brake...

I like to use the parking brake on an auto when I'm backing up to a trailer. Sometimes when you let off the brake, the truck wil move too far to hook up. I don't know the distance in teeth on the Allison, but some older autos it was pretty far.
