What is the final verdict on this one? Do I get the one for the 6.6 or the 8.1? What is the part number for the kit with proper hoses/etc I need?

Searching yielded difficult to comprehend results.

I think the part number is the same for both.

I think the part number is the same for both.

That thread leads to
1. 10385584 $119
or
2. 15295847 $70

Hence the confusion. 1 is listed as for 6.6, 2 is listed for 8.1. If 2 works, I wouldn't mind saving the $50!

I had a 05 truck the exact same as my 07 and it had a power steering oil cooler on it. But I've searched and can't find a replacement.

Not to add to the confusion but 15 minutes ago ordered 26078989 from my local dealer based on Post 19 here:
http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=102840&page=2

It is listed as
P/s oil cooler, all models, 1 ton, 8.1l, w/finned cooler - power, conventional - POWER, CONVENTIONAL

It won't have any hoses or clamps -just the cooler. I will get it on Wednesday and will post a picture in the evening.

When I search that in gmpartsdirect it auto cross-references to 15295847.

I am thinking I should just buy that (if it comes with hoses) and a pair of barb fittings/hose clamps from Home Depot.

If you search here by part number 26078989 will display.
http://www.gm-auto-parts.com/parts.htm

My local Chevy dealer is small -only 1 parts guy and he said 26078989 was good. My cost $58.00 plus tax. For the difference in price between 26078989 and 15295847 I can buy a lot of 3/8 P/S return hose.

Will post picture after I get it for comparision to picture posted by GRISWALD...

I did like a couple of the other guys here and bought a Summit Racing 18k tranny cooler with hose and fittings, ( part # SUM-G4961A ) Went to NAPA and bought 4' more of 3/8" i.d. power steering hose and a couple more clamps. Kit was $48.00 shipped to my door in 2 days ( used standard shipping, it was just that fast ). Used a piece of AL angle "iron" i had laying around, some flat black spray paint I had left over from another job, and about1 hrs. work. Oh, and 2 bottles of AMSOIL power steering fluid. All said and done cost me about $75

Interesting. That place does have it as a valid number. $51 sounds pretty good. A few feet of 3/8" hose, some barb fittings and a hose clamp here or there!

Not Willing to give up 7.5 x 15.25 x .75 area of the cooling stack for the P/S cooling. Price wise you talking about such a small difference it's like throwing nickels.....

Got my PS Cooler

GM must be out of stock on 26078989 as the part was referred to Lansing then subbed to 15295847 and fulfilled from Reno..... :(

First two pics are 15295847 third pic is from Grizwald's post #18 in this thread http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=242118&highlight=Power+Steering+Cooler&page=2

Looks like the difference between the two is the steering gear hose on the 15295847 (8.1) has a molded bend on the steering gear hose at the free end. The 10385584 (6.6) has mounting clip installed. Both Coolers have the same amount of fins - yes I blew up Grizwald's photo and counted:)

Might get installed over weekend - depends on weather (driveway at home) or if buddy's shop has available bay.

Usually 25 off GM list -no freight charges

So how much did you wind up paying? I was wondering if you got hit since they had to change the part they ordered. It looks like the part you ordered is $70 plus shipping/handling from gmpartsdirect.

Same list price as GM parts direct. Net price with tax was a little more than delivered cost from GM parts direct but no waiting and I support my local small town Chevy dealer. GM Parts Direct said 10-20 day delivery to me time frame. Where I work has an account with dealer...... Try hard to keep my money in local circulation but not always easy to do..... Had to mail/web order the Redline Syn P/S fluid because locals didn't stock and wanted me to pay $19.00/qt.

I agree. That is a great way to do business. I plan on calling my local dealer once we have this all figured out and seeing what they quote. If it is close to gmpartsdirect that is where I will be going!

The 15295847 PS cooler will bolt on to an LBZ with one very minor mod to the existing steering gear to pump return line. The existing return line assembly needs to have the existing flexible rubber hose removed. I removed the line assembly from the truck then took dremel to it to cut the crimp ferrule. Reinstalled the steel tube part back into its original place. Then slipped the "gear" end hose from cooler onto the tube with clamp. Even slipped the hose back into the existing clamp in the fan shroud.

Took about three hours including a discussion with my neighbor about removing a tree... It is pretty straight forward. Remove grille, left headlight, left turn signal and left fender liner. then jack up and remove left front tire. Fish PS cooler into position with hose going through radiator support above CAC tube. Remove existing return line assembly and modify. Reinstall line and hook up hoses as marked. Reinstall everything and check / top off PS fluid -make sure you work steering lock to lock and depress brake to get air out of system.

All the solutions are to lower the operating temp of the PS fluid. Remember these trucks use the PS pump to assist the brakes and the steering. Overheated fluid leads to hard steering, possible loss of braking (hydroboost failure), PS pump demise, ....... Lots of threads concerning these issues if your search. The Summit solution maybe cheaper but it gives up a lot of cooling stack real estate IMO. Especially if you want to expand tranny cooling or add an engine oil cooler.

At least 3 for a flush. Because nobody around here stocks Redline PS fluid, I get 4 qts for a flush to make sure some is left for top off checks.

Tried to order 26078989 and it is canceled and replaced with 15295847. This is $30 more expensive than the old number. Guess this is GM's bail out!

I saw that but couldn't figure out a way to mount to side of stack cleanly like GM cooler.
IMO adding heat load in the middle front is not a good idea after reading about the 2004.5-2005 overheating issues. The LBZ is better but still can be pushed into overheating pretty easy by driver towing a good load in the mountains during 100* temps

I too used this one. It's a much better and more efficient cooler than the cheap flimsy one that GM offers. Many will defend it because it's OEM and they paid more for it.

I have zero steering issues any longer. I flushed out my power steering/hydro boost system with 3 quarts of redline and enjoy trouble free steering.

Thanks guys for the tips on this one.

I bought the cheap flimsy GM one. This was nearly a year ago. Redline in it. And I replaced the two lines that have crimps to and from the hydroboost to steering gear/pump.

Truck steers like a car in the parking lot. My tires are 265. No whine turning or groaning at the extreme turns.

Key thing is to note your crimps on the lines. If there is even a hint of moistness..replace them.

The only thing that stands out saying its not "OEM" are the hose clamps. As far as blocking the front, its not that wide.
