Anything over stock is going to cause quicker wear and tear than they were speced at from GM. But there are many post on this and you will get many different answers. But most say 70hp is about it from the average I have seen. You might search for the many post on allison limit and get your thoughts on it. I say if wanting a different programmer then many to choose from and everyone has there pros and cons on each. But my reading here seems many lean towards PPE or Quad. I myself like EFILive. You can make as many tunes as the paramaters can be changed.

Right around 60-90 over stock for Alli. And as for programmers, PPE is probably the best hand held out there and a step above that is EFILive. I have been getting away with running a 160HP tune on my stck tranny for a year now. Hope it lasts till I can get to Merchant for a built one.

EFILive is suitable for stock and modified vehicles. Our product is tuning software, which allows you to make changes to your vehicle's ECM and TCM. The beauty of EFILive is that you can change your tune as many times as you like.
So for today, you could add 60-80 HP and improve MPG, however in the future if you upgrade your Transmission or add other hard parts you can simply change your tune to dial in your hard part changes.

i would say get efi live and put a dsp2 or 5 swith so you can run big power here and there in the first 3 gears and have a lower milage tune for daily driving. the most damage on your tranny happens on the 4th to 5th gear shifts. so if you only use the big tunes from stop light to stop light or something like that youll be good for a while. my efi on the biggest tune is about 275 above stock and im still running a stock tranny.

with just a regular handheld tuner right around 90 you can get away with I ran 130 HP tune on my truck for about a year but then the tranny started to act up a little bit so now I'm working on building a transmission so I can do whatever I want. At least get a transgo shift kit and that will help you out a little bit.

I have a PPE hot +2 ET that I have been running on level 7 and 8 for about a year now and I havent had any issues. The trick is slowly moving up the tunes from low to high. I ran level 4 for a week, then 5 for a week, then 6, then 7 and 8. I never limped the trans and I dont drive the truck easy either. From what i remember level 8 is a 300+ HP tune. I may be on borrowed time but my truck doesnt miss a beat, and the trans fluid looks and smells goo. By the way this is on a truck with the stock trans and 155K miles on it with a 6" lift and 35's.

man oh man barry, thats a pretty good job of keeping her alive!!! i smoked and i mean smoked my trans with the same chip, i was on 7 most of the time but ran tune 9 here and there. my hypertech was perfect for the stock transmission, 90hp faint haze of smoke and didnt get me in trouble to boot!!! it was good for a 14.9 at the strip too!

The hardest part about answering this question is that some products are over rated and some under rated by HP numbers. Also, vehicle weight and use can play a key role here. We ran several trucks with stock trans at 500+RWHP (DJ somewhat inflated numbers) on a Dynojet in MN one year. None of these trucks would complete any sort of acceleration run on the road without limp at these levels.
Also to add to this, TQ numbers particularly peak numbers tend to get under the Allison's skin. This is why I try to tune for a flat TQ curve for the stock Allison and keep the peaks from getting out of hand.
P.S. If you were to do a survey of how many guys with modules including "transmission slip protect" I think you'd find many of them have or had transmission slip issues.
