: Oil in intake
fish91 02-21-2009, 09:48 AM Yesterday CEL went on and truck went in limp mode, had some codes turbo underboost, MAP sensor, so I checked Air Filter, MAP,& MAF sensors MAP had water on it and looked brown like oil. Is this from PCV system? Now I want to do reroute. Is it difficult and should I clean intake?
Tony Burkhard 02-21-2009, 10:09 AM Here is a kit to help make the job easy http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=240415
You can clean the tubes but the IC will dirty up the passenger side unless you clean the IC also.
fish91 02-21-2009, 10:26 AM Yeah I was thinking all intake including IC how hard is that?
Tony Burkhard 02-21-2009, 11:18 AM Its a 3 hr job to R and R the IC and add what ever time it takes to clean it out.
serpa4 02-21-2009, 05:31 PM So, how much oil builds up in the IC? On my 200K jetta (ya, completely different) I'd get a about 1/8 of a quart.
I though welding a bung and drain plug would help to empty it out. Just pull the plug, rev the motor a bit to creat a little boost, let it run that way for a bit to blow the majority out. Never did it though.
I know oil is an insulator thus decreasing the IC effeciency, but anyone know if its worth pulling vs just doing the PVC re route?
I can imagine pulling IC and finding a tad oil or like 1/2 quart.

ar077 02-22-2009, 09:02 AM Anyone seriously thinking about removing the IC to clean it should just throw it away and replace it with a Banks Techni-Cooler, especially if you're planning to upgrade to a heftier turbocharger.
fish91 02-22-2009, 09:58 AM Actually was wondering if I should even worry about it anyway engines have used PCV systems for more than 50 years. Its probably good for turbo to suck crankcase pressure anyway. As for cleaning IC it would take alot longer to earn money for Banks IC that really isn't needed than it would to clean complete intake which probably isn't needed either.

Combined with EGR it is very very bad for the motor. The few reasons they have it is to stop any drips of oil that might come out the breather and also for under hood emisions. If you put alot of miles on your vehicle with both EGR and PCV in place it will coke up your intake and be very exspensive to clean. VW diesels have to be cleaned about ever 80 to 120k. On the D-max its more than a ten hour job. If oil builds up in the IC and a slug of it goes into your motor it could cause it to crack a piston.
serpa4 02-22-2009, 07:58 PM I pulled the entire EGR and cooler off my Jetta, but the PCV system is still in place.
fish91 02-22-2009, 08:31 PM How was crank case vented on diesels before pcv was added?
Tony Burkhard 02-22-2009, 08:43 PM How was crank case vented on diesels before pcv was added? The crank case was vented out a pipe to the ground. My kit vents them just like they were pre LLY.
xtremebikr04 02-22-2009, 08:43 PM It was vented right into the air via a tube coming off the engine running straight down just past the oil pan.
fish91 02-22-2009, 09:21 PM I guess oil on my driveway is better than in My IC.
serpa4 02-22-2009, 09:37 PM Put an air/oil separator on the end of the discharge tube to catch oil. Then, when full, drain into a cup and dispose somewhere other than the driveway. I'll do the mod someday on my LBZ, but it sure won't drip in the driveway. I'd get shot.
Tony Burkhard 02-22-2009, 10:20 PM I guess oil on my driveway is better than in My IC.Close to 95% of them that have the PCV rerouted dont drip. And if you put something on the end of the hose I hope it dont have resriction. If it does bad things will happen. Most of the trucks will drip if the PCV isnt rerouted.

SHACK!! My PCV hoses haven't dripped since I installed Tony's kit, but if they do, WHOGAS? I can't believe the haze I've read about that guys will put themselves through to prevent a drop or two of PCV oil from landing on their driveways.
