I took a drive from J'ville to Tampa this weekend. On the way back up I75 I saw a Ford F350 dually towing a trailer with a freaken semi on it. The back end of the F350 was near the ground. What an idiot!

Hopefully the guy was only moving it a short distance. If he continued up I75 hopefully the FHP nailed his ass before the rear tires gave out. Just goes to show you there are idiots out there that think they can tow anything with a 1 ton dually. :o: JJ :)

Well 2 hopes. 1) That no one got injured. 2) The truck is fried, and won't be on the road again.

JJ,

By "semi" I'm assuming you mean the tractor (a Pete, KW, Freightshaker, etc.). Depending on several factors, these weigh in anywhere from 14K to 19K. Surely that is within the Furd SuperDuper limits on the commmercial...what was it? "Stop a 21,473.8117403??? lbs load, downhill, in the rain, around a sharp bend? Most don't take into consderation the weight of the trailer itself, just the load anyways.

I once was challenged by a couple of RV dealer drivers down I-81 from NY, through the Blue Ridge Mts. to I-40 in TN. They would pass me doing 90-95 mph with Avion 5ers in tow, every 100-150 miles or so. They must of been going through some fuel like it was going out of style, or had very weak bladders. Everytime they zinged past, the 18-wheelers would come up on the CB, chiding that those Furds were putting my GM to shame. Last laugh was when I passed them on I-40 West, just before Knoxville. They were on the side with at least 9 marked and unmarked State troopers...maybe to have a pic-nic, share a few Rollin-Rucks, and talke about other people's wives, or maybe about how much the one in front was still smoldering....after the trooper put out the fire under the Furd's hood!

They must of heard me giggling over the Bluegrass tune, as I passed by, cause I got a salute! Oh, and I got to the show first with an average of 10 mpg and no tickets!

The only comments were "You're a long way from home, junior" over the CB because I had "AK OR BUST" spraypainted on the planks blocking off the backside of my trailer. With that, it seemed all the pro drivers sorta kept tabs on me.. told me when my loading ramp pin worked loose and I was about to start taking out mile markers as they worked their way out... other stuff like that.

CB is a good thing in the lower 48. VHF is the way to go up here.

RF3, I didn't get the brand of semi-truck, one of those with the flat front, 2 rear dually axles, not one of those mobile home haulers. The flatbed trailer easily weighed in around 6-8k lbs. That dually looked like one of those "low riders" the kids drive. Front wheels barely touching the ground. Yep, a disaster waiting to happen. JJ :o:

Not as good as JJ's but how about a Furd on a trailor with a strap over the hood and one over the bed wouldn't of belived it if I hadn't seen it would have only been better if he had used chains ):h

my dad did one of those bumper draggers with his 1500 chevy and then again with the dmax. both times it was a tandum pintle hit trailer with a good load. nothing serious. i have grossed well over 50k on the farm towing 2 wagons to town. i had no problem stoping them. that ford shouldn't have had any problem. i wounldn't want to do it on the highway, but it is not a big deal. you worry to much. if the front tires were off the ground and he couldn't steer if he wanted to, now that's a problem. as long as the semi could brake itself then all was fine.

Surely you weren't going over 10-15 mph, any farm wagon I've seen is usually slingin all over the road. I guess if you don't have much speed you wont have a hard time stopping 'em.;)

Duramaximizer,

 Maybe I wasn't clear enough! The semi-truck was on a flatbed trailer being pulled by a 3500 dually, ass end just off the ground, front end squirrel hunting looking up in the trees. :o:

Do I worry too much, Censored straight! There is no way that anyone driving that 3500 could control that load under any kind of emergent conditions. :( Safety first, always! JJ :)

I saw a Dmax pulling a twin axle dually 5th wheel flat bed on I-35 in Iowa. On it was and old grain truck chassis with dual axles. The frame had been cut to convert it into a trailer but the grain box was still on it. It wasn't so much the weight as the height. The grain box had really tall side boards and it was windy as he!! He had to be pushing 15' overall. He was doing about 62 mph. The way the engine was winding he must'a been pulling in 4th gear.

JJ, you will appreciate this one. my dad was telling me about a guy he saw when he went to pickup some sod down in hastings. these guys were from palatka and got a couple pallets on a trailer and in the back of their old (70s model) ford pickup. the front tires were lifting off the ground, so they just piled some pieces of sod on the hood until it balanced out the weight enough for the front and to touch down. gotta love it!!

They likely threw in a couple of lunch specials from the Church's Fried Chicken place for some additional weight and were good to go! ):h JJ :)

So far in my short 31 year life, I have seen two eye openers on the towing front.

First, about 10 years ago, I was driving up I-5 a few miles north of Buttonwillow, I closed in on a sail boat getting towed at about 35-40mph! As I closed up on the sail boat, I wasn't seeing a truck. Hmm, weird. As I pull out into the fast lane, I see a '84-85 Nissan standard cab short bed pick up! This "truck" was pulling at least a 20' full size sail boat, probally longer. As I slow way down, and take a good look at the sight, I notice the rear bumper about 3" off the ground. The rear axle was on the bump stops, and the front tires were almost in the air! Talk about scarry!

The second. Yesterday I was traveling between job sites, on a fairly twisty and hilly road. The biggest grade is about 7% for over a mile, with three fairly nasty turns, so no getting a run at it. There was a old Ford pick-up, F250 C/S (somewhere in the 70's frame) was towing a tripple axle bumper pull trailer with a dozer on it. This was not a small dozer, it had an 8 foot blade on it. The truck was getting up to 20mph for top speed, and was in granny low for all the up hills. Plus the old engine was blowing smoke pretty bad. What really confused me was that the guide truck following and blocking traffic was a Dodge 1-ton dullie w/ Cummins!
